He had an opportunity to scramble and pick up a first down easily but decided to launch the ball downfield instead. He only needed 3 yards to get a first down, and he easily could have scrambled for at least 15-20 yards because the defense had vacated the middle of the field.

The WR ended up dropping the pass, and Oklahoma had to punt instead of getting an easy 3 yards for a first down. Oklahoma then proceeded to fumble the punt, and the downward spiral was on.

That was actually the RB who dropped that pass. All the more reason the QB should have tucked it in and ran.

34-7 rest of game and in the elite 8, they're pretty good.

He made the right choice. He can't be held responsible for a player dropping a near-perfect pass.

Maybe so, but 3 losses still doesn’t seem right in the playoffs. Not many teams at all would’ve gotten the privilege to still have a chance at a championship with 3 losses.

That drop by #24 was the biggest play of the game

When this thing goes to 16 teams you'll see a few more 3 loss teams particularly from the SEC because of the strength of schedule. So get used to it.

It’s a fact.

OU’s offense isn’t LSU bad, but it’s bad.

This is the same thing as a coach going for it on fourth down, getting it and being a genius versus missing it a being a clown.

The receiver was wide open. He catches that ball that hits him square in the hands, he easily strolls into the end zone. All Alabama momentum is stopped and OU probably wins.

If Mateer decides to scramble and OU doesn’t score on that drive, people are asking why he didn’t hit the wide open receiver for an easy touchdown.

Exactly. This is all results oriented judgement by the OP. That was the proper play and a great throw by Mateer. He wasn't fitting the ball between coverage. It was as low risk of a throw as you can get in a live game.

You always get the first down and keep the drive alive first and foremost.

Getting greedy and trying to get it all at once with a throw downfield leads to this result. Downfield throws are never a high percentage play like scrambling and picking up 3 yards when the middle of the field is vacated.

Nuss screwed us over numerous times in 2024 by doing this.

You forgot the part where he hit the wide open defender between the numbers -and that had no one around him for like 10 yards- to provide practically a gimme pick 6 at the very end of the half…

He was wide open and it was a 25-30 yard air pass not a 60 yard bomb over the top. It was an easy pitch and catch and they didn’t execute.

He escaped the pocket and kept his eyes down field. He completes the pass and Kirk is saying “Amazing job of keeping his eyes down the field” rather than “He got greedy”

If the wide arse open receiver catches a ball that hits him in his hands, it’s a touchdown. Mateer made the correct play

Were you complaining about them being in before the SEC game? Because they had the same record as Oklahoma, Miami, and ND and were ahead of them before having to play an extra game against UGA

Let’s agree to disagree.

You always pick up the first down and keep your drive alive first and foremost. Too many things can go wrong with throws downfield. (And they did go wrong as you saw).

Also, the field was so wide open that Mateer might have gone 20-30 yards or even scored if he tucked it and ran.
