I have a son that is interviewing for a job in Lafayette in a few weeks. What areas would you recommend in and around Lafayette for a young family (married with two very young daughters)to live in so they can start researching?
This may not be the best board to ask this question but I felt it was the safest :)
Thanks

Houston is only a few hours away, that's where he should look.
Not really

Youngsville and Broussard area, low crime and close to everything.

Would disagree but just depends what you are looking for. Youngsville/Broussard is mostly all new development for the most part. If they are interviewing in Lafayette proper then I would not recommend moving out to Youngsville/Broussard unless you want a small commute. Ive never seen the appeal of those areas and there are plenty of great areas to live in Lafayette proper in all price ranges.
Staying inside the area of Johnston, Ambassador, Kaliste Saloom, and Pinhook is a good starting point but there a ton of great spots to live all over the city depending what they are looking for/price point.

Thanks, any other info about the city and what they could expect would be greatly appreciated.

St streets area is nice.

Definitely south east side of city if the kids will go to public schools.
Stay away from the north side at all costs.
East of Johnston Street should be good.
All major shopping areas are in this general area.

This. There are grocery stores, restaurants, shopping all out there now. When you need to go into Lafayette for stuff you’re already closest to the side of town you want to be.

Definitely Broussard/Youngsville. Good public schools and only a short commute into Laffy proper. Plenty of eating spots and big box stores are relatively close too.

Have you even been to Lafayette?
Good luck finding anything decent there under $500k and prepare to pay private school tuition. I’m not arguing there are great places to live there, but they’re generally not starter homes
Go to Youngsville especially if you plan on the public school system

Look off of East and West Bayou, Old Settlement, River Ranch, Bendel Gardens.
Don’t move to Youngsville unless you want to fight with traffic every day. There are plenty of good and safe places to live within Lafayette proper.

Did he say anything about “starter” homes?
I agree 100% with the poster you’re responding to, live in Lafayette proper. Yeah, it’s not the cheapest, and we send our kids to private school, but the quality of life here is pretty great. The community of private schools, is essentially like a “neighborhood school”. Great parental engagement, people of similar backgrounds, etc…

There are plenty of good options, but we probably need some more information.
Does he know where his office/workplace would be?
Do they intend to send their kids to private school or public school?
Budget on a house?
They can find a nice house in Lafayette proper for under $500K, but They'll likely be sending their kids to private school. If his job is south of Lafayette or if he doesn't mind a 20-25min commute to and from work, they can buy a nice house in Broussard or Youngsville and send their kids to public school if they want.

Youngsville/Broussard is nice IF you don't have a commute into the middle of lafayette at peak traffic hours.
Lots of good areas in Lafayette proper, it just depends on the work commute and where the kids will attend school.

Broadmore/lafayette high (especially if you get into gifted) aren’t bad but I’d agree it’s dependent on whether or not you can afford private school
