Pros and cons

Any recommendations for a beginner?

Jumping on the Lane Train and starting hot yoga!

Thinking an evening hobby will keep me from sipping brown liquor as much as I do!

Go to 2-3 beginners classes to get a the hang of it. You should be fine to do normal classes pretty quickly.

A friend of mine went to a couple of yoga classes with his wife, at her request. He called it, "farting practice."

I joined HOTWORX two years ago. They have rowing machine and cycling rooms too. It was great but the one by LSU is just run like a sorority.
ETA: canceled my membership last month.

May want to start with freezing yoga, then progress to cold yoga, followed by lukewarm yoga, balmy yoga then and only then hot yoga.

Do not drink a lot the night before. I know this from experience.

I suggest trying a couple of basic or beginner (not hot) yoga classes first.

Then try an entry level hot class. It didn't sound interesting to me at first, but it's a dry heat, like Arizona, so you don't pour sweat immediately like you are doing yardwork in Baton Rouge in July.

The heat is nice if you have back issues or sore joints/muscles. You are warmed up 30 seconds after walking in the room.

Weird to see it on our carpetbagger.
