I don’t even live near Dallas, but I’m adding Hutchins BBQ to my list of places to patronize on any future trips up there.

Texas' Hutchins BBQ draws scrutiny after owner's comments about Islam
quote:

You don’t see a lot of restaurant owners getting into the thick of it in online comment sections, unless it has to do with business. So it was a little strange to see Tim Hutchins pop up under a post about one man’s visit to an Islamic Center in Frisco. It was even weirder to see the owner of Hutchins BBQ have a back-and-forth with people about the relationship between Christians and Muslims.

On Nov. 30, a Dallas real estate owner shared on Facebook that he was invited to an open house for the Islamic Center in Frisco. “I always admire people who are actually trying to learn more about each other, and get along rather than taking the easy route of tribalism,” Jared Tye wrote. It seemed innocuous enough, until the replies rolled in. One of them was from Hutchins.

“Appreciate the heart behind this, but let’s not be naïve,” Hutchins wrote. “Loving our neighbors doesn’t mean turning off discernment. We can show respect and kindness without pretending every worldview is the same.”

Hutchins' comment elicited its own thread of heated responses. Some accused him of Islamophobia. Others said they would boycott Hutchins BBQ restaurants. And a few took to debating him on what exactly was meant by “discernment.”

Not really sure what the guy said that was so offensive?

This is a very logical and common sense approach to anything. Therefore the left with hate it.

I have no clue about the context of the comment and do not care. Having this type of mindset will serve most people well 90+% of the time.

I’ll be going there and giving him my business. To hell with these invaders and the fools that say we shouldn’t acknowledge the problems they bring with them.

Where are we going to end up if we all "just sat that one out?"

My extended family loves Hutchins, so they'll double down their support

If you're going to stick your neck out on something like this, a BBQ proprietor doing it over Islam seems like it's about as safe as you can get

Word to the wise. If you're a business owner and you're in the business of making money, it isn't wise to go online and start picking fights with entire blocks of people.

They’ll still have a line waiting for them to open this weekend at their downtown McKinney location.

I guess this is also true. Muslims don't eat BBQ. Not observing Muslims anyways. It goes deeper than just not eating pork. They shouldn't be eating any food that is cooked on the same grill as pork.

When i go to my guy to buy hardwood lumber, I exit right there at 380 off of 75 next to that restaurant. I'll have to stop by next month when I need to get a new order.

Frisco and McKinney are pretty conservative areas. He will be fine.

It depends on your clientele. In this situation, he will probably do better. If he was selling halal then no.

They are offended by the notion that there is objective truth and the rejection of relativism. The suggestion that Islam’s worldview might be less valid implies that there might be a more valid worldview. Which worldview might be the most valid? There was a man who was crucified, buried for three days and brought back to life. We’re celebrating his birth next week. That man claimed to the be the exclusive way to God. People who reject him tend to hate being reminded of him or of the reality of objective truth.

John 14:6 (ESV)
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

It's not wise to do it if you don't consider the consequences.

For people like him, if they do consider the consequences and decide they want to say something about their community being overtaken by people who have no reason to be in America - good for him. Need more like him and we should support those who take the risk.

This is silly. It's not about cowering before anyone.

Ignoring the problem is what has gotten us here. Islam hasn't changed its stripes is over 1000 years. It's still the primitive oppressive religion it's always been.
