If you’re like me, you owe a debt of gratitude to Rob Reiner.

I was starting HS right around the time that “Archie Bunker’s Place” ended its run, so “All in the Family” was a big part of our entertainment repertoire as grammar school kids. And while he was by no means decisive, the Michael “Meathead” Stivic character, with his anti-Americanism and limp-wristed non-masculinity, contributed greatly to me growing up to be a right-wing conservative partisan (Jimmy Carter was also a major factor). Thank you, Rob Reiner, not so much for leading me down the right path, but for showing me which path to avoid.

A little older than you, but I remember hating meathead for that reason.

That is why Trump has built up some level of popularity in the Youth. They are tired of the crappy policies of the liberals that make their lives more difficult.

Both Norman Lear and Rob Reiner thought that Reiner's character would emerge as the "hero" of All in the Family.
Boy, were those lefties wrong.

He played a nauseating character and somehow became an even bigger dousch nozzle in real life.

I probably saw more reruns than the prime time.
Republicans should pay to air episodes with a lot of stivic content

Good points, sometimes the influences that stick out are the ones we don’t want to emulate. Guess that dude wasn’t acting, but get it, no one wanted to be a weak feckless meathead, back then, but boy have times changed, they are everywhere now, so bad times are coming

I disliked the mans politics but so what.
I know him more from the 90s films he directed and his bit parts in other movies. The father in Wolf of Wallstreet was the last thing I think I know him from and he was funny as heck in that one.

As if the Meathead character weren’t loathsome enough, there was a short-lived spinoff named “Gloria”. It wasn’t shown in the series, but the backstory was that Gloria was raising Joey on her own because “Professor Stivic” ran off with one of his students to live in a commune. Bottom line, Archie, a WW2 vet who was loyal to his wife until her death (that episode was pure gold), was 1,000,000 times the man that Meathead was.

Damn I remember that episode. I always think about my order of putting socks and shoes because of it.

Proving that no one is totally worthless. They can always serve as a bad example.

Meathead was a disrespectful preachy bitch.
The preachy aspect was a theme in sitcoms produced by libs for a long time.
MASH
Maude
Rhoda
Designing Women
The commonality in these is Linda Bloodworth-Thomason.

Thing is… playing Meathead was natural for Reiner. That was really who he was.

Norman Lear is the real person you should be thanking.

Even as a kid, I knew they were both wrong. Ditch the socks and just throw on the shoes because in an emergency socks aren’t going to do a damn thing for you.
Plus, it’s just faster to put on your shoes.

Carroll O'Connor was a big liberal. He actually had to act to play the character of an over the top bigot. Later in life, his son died of a drug overdose, and he fought the rest of his life to make sure his son's drug dealer was charged with his murder. And he was.
