I was on the SEC web site looking at past football champions. I noticed that 1984 was vacated. Does anyone know what team was the champion and why it was vacated? TIA.

It had something to do with UF. I think LSU won it by default due to UF getting put on a big time probation. We played Nebraska in the Sugar Bowl and lost.
That was my freshman year.

Those 80s Nebraska bowls were BRUTAL.

We should recognize as we should recognize 1908 natty and unvacate those wins Woody foolishly offered up to the NCAA. Maybe Verge will rectify.

LSU and Florida tied in the season opener, all LSU had to do was beat State and they would have been SEC champs and a trip to the Sugar. LSU got upset, then Florida got busted for cheating, the SEC Presidents stripped Florida of the title and sent LSU to the Sugar.

LSU was the designated champion-- Florida was on probation. Our only loss in the conference was a 14-16 shocker to Miss. St, who had a poor record that year. LSU was 4-1-1

That was John Bond as I recall. That motherfricker had LSU's number for sure.

Was Bond still there in '84? I remember him from '81 and then '82 when he gave us our first loss that season, a week after beating Bama badly in Birmingham!

John Bond was the starting QB for the Miss State Bulldogs from 1978 to 1993.

Florida cheated. They bought “The Great Wall of Florida” and others.

Strange, long story. NCAA started investigating Florida for major violations in early 1984. Heading into the season they had an insane amount of allegations under then coach Charlie Pell.
Season starts with a game in Tampa vs defending champ,Miami. Miami scores 13 points in the last 12 seconds and wins, 32-20. As was mentioned LSU and Florida tie,21-21. The next week Florida destroyed Tulane,63-21. Knowing the hammer was going to drop Florida fired Pell and named assistant Galen Hall interim coach.
To Florida's credit they kept winning and winning. In mid November, the NCAA hit them with heavy penalties. The tricky part was normally this is done in the off season. So, with Florida finished with SEC play at 5-0-1, what about the SEC title and Sugar Bowl ---- SEC had been under contact since 1976 to send their champion.
NCAA,SEC and Florida agreed Florida's two year Bowl ban would start immediately, but the Gators would be 1984 SEC Champions and the runner up would go to the Sugar.Oddly enough this would be Florida's first SEC title. In fact during the 1985 LSU-Nebraska Sugar Bowl periodically on the Superdome scoreboards would flash CONGRATULATIONS FLORIDA GATORS 1984 SEC Champions. Case closed.
Wrong. That Spring at the 1985 SEC meetings a motion led by Tennessee to strip Florida of its title passed and the SEC indeed 'vacated' their title. Instead of elevating second place LSU, which would have been hollow and silly, there was no champion for 1984.
In 1984,1985 and 1990, Florida had the best record in the SEC but was ineligible for the title (Tennessee was also 5-1-0 in 1985 losing to Florida,17-10.)
