I have an older desktop computer that I built years ago to game on. We moved about 3 years ago and i'm getting the itch to play a few games and have a computer that can be utilized in the house.

Few questions.

1. It seems there is some sort of virus, yahoo keeps forcing it's self as the search function. I remove/delete it and when i re-boot it just comes back. What is the best antivirus system to utilize that can remove and then prevent moving forward?

2. Is there anything i can do to boost this PCs performance now? I'll post the specs below. I'd like to be able to run the typical games and stream without issues.

3. Any perk to updating to Windows 11?

OS - Windows 10 Pro
Processor - i5-3570K
CPU - 3.4Ghz 4 Core
Motherboard - Z77 Extreme4
GPU - NVIDA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti

I don't think you can update to Windows 11 with that processor.

Check for and remove programs that you don't recognize and remove extensions from your browsers.

I don't have any feedback in regards to gaming. The gaming board might be able to help there.

convert it to Linux and you'll see a significant performance improvement but I cannot say how that will work for you as a gaming platform since I don't play computer games

Do the games require you to be online? If not, just disconnect and go back to a restore point.

As a rule, not particularly well.

I keep hearing great things about Valve’s Proton package for playing Windows games on Linux. One of my projects next year will be to refurb an old Dell box I have, slap Linux Mint on it, and give proton a try.

Games play great on Linux, especially if they are through Steam.

Win11 will tell you it's not compatible with that processor, but you can do a workaround upgrade. I think it will work fine with Win11 if you can get through the upgrade. I've done it twice and haven't had any issues.

I doubt Win11 will get you much gaming performance... Might want to try a more gaming tuned Linux distro like Bazzite, its based on Fedora so it is pretty stable and very current. Shiuld natively support nVidia so no compiling drivers and the like.

You don't mention RAM nor hard drive. 16 GB RAM at least and get an SSD hard drive. Ask chatgpt how to install Win 11 on none supported hardware.

That's not "years ago," that's over a decade ago.

Just buy a $300 Surface 4 off of eBay. Integrated graphics now blow away discrete graphics from 5-6 years ago in terms of speed. Thisis also $289: Refurbished DELL Business Desktop OptiPlex 3060-SFF Intel Core i5-8500 16GB DDR4 500 GB M.2 NVMe SSD Intel UHD Graphics 630 Windows 11 Pro 64-bit

You're infected already, and yet you're looking for advice to run a system and getting feedback to keep running a system that isn't getting security updates.

He didn't say how much RAM he has installed. This hasn't been good universal advice in nearly two decades

I remember when 64GB was cheap enough that it was worth it to upgrade instead of having to keep deleting old data frames in R studio.

In July it sure was when I bought the 128GB. Since the memory market is just getting worse, I'm going to wait a few more weeks to list the 64GB of DDR4 with the mobo and CPU.
