I admit I have only a basic interest in HS ball and I will check the brackets during the playoffs to see won what.

I read some of the LHSAA thread but there has to be more to it. Did they have to forfeit some games like Acadiana did a while back and got a lowball seed because of it?

If not, major upsets by narrow wins over the #6, #3, #2 & #1 seeds on the way to a title is damn outstanding! That must be unprecedented.

They play in a very tough district

ETA. Three teams from that district were in the semi-final, downvoter.

No, they played it close all year and put it all together at the end.

Some teams get better
Some stay the same
Some get worse

They learned how to win the close ones.

Congrats Lions

I think White Castle was a 15 seed when they won in 2010. Jennings made it as a 23 seed I think in 2019. Teams just get hot at the right time, or have a dude who turns it on in the playoffs.

Is this their 1st state championship?

I know for years they could never get over West Monroe and Ruston.

No forfeits. 1-4 in District, only beating Pineville. They were the #1 seed prior to entering district if that means anything.

Ruston 21-14 L
West Monroe 39-25 L
Neville 38-37 L
ASH 28-21 L

The only one that wasn’t “close” was West Monroe with another WM pick 6 being called back for a ref running into a radio media member. So you could say it should’ve been worse. That being said, Ouachita lead in the 4th quarter of that very game.

Since they were 7th graders this was always their most talented class. Then their QB and RB went to St Fred’s for 2 years. They returned the last 2 years and put it together in the playoffs to win by 3, 2, 6, 7, and 1. All 1 play games that they lost the last couple of years.

Gotta tip your cap for their play in the playoffs. They went on the road to #3, 6, 2, and 1 in the Dome and won them all. Truly earned that state title.

When Don Redden played there they used to put two A letters in their name.

Won it in 89, runner up in 94 and then won it yesterday.

Ouachita was hard to beat back in the day when they were combined with kids from the Richwood area. Once Richwood opened back up they had some down years.

As someone that played on the 94 team, it’s awesome to see them back on top and they had a tough run to make it happen. They without a doubt earned it.

My buddy’s son is a senior at Ruston, so I was rooting for them. Ouachita played great, Ruston could not stop the QB and WR. My buddy said before season started he didn’t think Ruston would go far in playoffs this year and they are a sophomore/junior led team. Ouachita has a lot of seniors this year. Props to the Lions, brutal playoff schedule and won it all. I’m think Ruston is back again next year, tough way to lose a game.

Ruston making 4 straight trips to the Dome is impressive. Probably will make a 5th next year

I’ve heard Neville is dropping down to 4A but I’m not 100% sure if true. W Monroe, Ruston, and ASH will be good.

It’ll be easier next year, but this year it was definitely the toughest. Next year Peabody replaces Neville. So basketball gets better, football and baseball likely dip a tad in overall strength.

Was it 87 or 88, when Ouachita was 7-2 , ranked 9th in the state, and missed the playoffs?

I’ve seen many a games in the Dome and that 94 one was one that I’ll never forget. Hahnville putting it to the Lions right off the bat and taking that big lead to the 4th qtr

Fans were leaving in droves yet we hung around as casual fans for the hell if it. Well the corn fed mules turned it on that qtr. it was like watching kids playing grownups. Hahnville players being run over, drug into the end zone. 10/15/20 yards a pop. All that in that great comeback and throw an interception on the last drive that would have taken the lead.

Congrats to the Lions

Ouachita was never a great football program until their new high school was built in 1987/88 and Richwood High School closed and the kids went to Ouachita. That 1989 state championship team was packed with former Richwood players and was very talented.
