Heading to Asheville for a few days after Christmas. We have the Biltmore scheduled but since my husband said, "you better have some fun things planned other than seeing a house with Christmas lights" I figured I'd ask for suggestions.

We have never been to Asheville and with it being cold, not sure hiking is on our list of things to do unless its pretty mild. Would love some recommendations for activities for 3 boys, pre teens to mid teens, would enjoy as well as some good restaurants. TIA!

I’ll be there as well.

We were going to do this (no kids just my wife and I) but saw the ticket prices and said frick that.

Can’t be very helpful with kid-friendly activities, but if you need brewery recommendations I can assist.

For restaurants:

Chai Pani
Bull and Beggar
12 Bones
Curate
Vivian
White Duck
Good Fish

Tickets were insane. $700+ for 5 people was a little ridiculous.

Would love brewery recs as well. Hubby would definitely appreciate that!

Staying downtown so hopefully that will be convenient.

Breweries (you could throw a rock and hit a good brewery, but here are some I have been to and recommend):

Burial (my favorite)
Wicked Weed (they have a funkatorium that only does sours and a normal location, both great)
Hi-Wire
New Belgium
Eluvium
Highland

Also, if you keep an eye out for the food truck for Smokee’s Pizza, highly recommend. My friends brother runs it and they make a hell of a pizza.

Y’all please report back after your trips. We’re thinking about doing Asheville after Christmas next year.

Recently went to a wedding at Biltmore so we weren’t able to really do as much around town as we wanted, but did have brunch at Grove Park Inn and it was great, with an excellent view.

There’s a folk art museum not faraway.

We did an escape room.

Biltmore is a full day.

Grove Park Inn is worth a look.

There’s a glass making place downtown.
It’s kind of fun to watch.

Last time I was there the stench of the devil’s lettuce was ubiquitous.

Oh it’s much more than that. He’ll be impressed. Same for The Grove Park. Just get out on the Blue Ridge Parkway and head towards Pisgah.

Check out the Sierra Nevada Brewery. It’s like Wonka Land of beer. And their food is great too. Sierra Nevada

A couple of things my teen has enjoyed on cold/rainy days --

1. The Asheville Retrocade. (There's also the Asheville Pinball Museum downtown, but we haven't been.)

2. Asheville Pizza and Brewing has a movie theater with bar and food.

I went to the Biltmore last January, and all the Christmas stuff was still up. Worth the price to me. Make sure you do every part of the inside (basement, etc but hards to miss, lol). And don't forget to walk and check out the Conservatory. Get all you can out of what you paid for.

About an hours drive from Asheville is Chimney Rock State Park. The view is absolutely stunning.

Breweries:

Burial is the best
Dssolver is my 2nd Choice. They make really good Hazy's
Sierra Nevada is just a beautiful place plus they have every beer they make on tap there.

They have a speakasy called Crow & Quill which has a 20's-30's setting. It also has nearly every whiskey or bourbon you want. Sorta pricey but worth it if you've been looking to try something you cant find. I go every time I'm in town.

some excellent info in this thread. We will be there in February for the Billy strings run but will have days and a couple of nights free. Hoping the weather won’t be miserable

Biltmore is a full day easily. Was there at Thanksgiving and did the lights and was great. Check out the green house by the house and if you go over to Antler Hill Village there is a lot to do for kids.

went in mid-October for the fall foliage and was amazing. stayed a few nights at the grove park inn, lots of history involved so you can actually tour the hotel and I would recommend that inside and out. twisted laurel was great for dinner. for a quick and easy breakfast biscuit head was good. we wanted to make it to black mountain during the vacation but didn't have the time. biltmore can easily be an all day event because we were there for 4-5 hours and only did the grounds because we had a dog.
