LA Bowl RIP, first of many

The 2026 bowl calendar will have one fewer game on its schedule, as the LA Bowl will shut down after this year's matchup between Washington and Boise State on Saturday night

less bowls and make the cut off 7 or 8 wins. it would make the sponsorships more competitive, and more money would be put into the bowls making them more attractive for the teams and the fans.

In the playoffs era, bowls are dead

This probably needed. I hate to say this because more football is usually good football, but if we want to keep bowls around, they should make them a reward for actual good teams again. Cut most of these shitty bowls, keep like 10 to 12 more prestigious bowls around, and raise the threshold to 9 wins. Backfill with highest ranking 8 win teams if needed. That’s the way bowls were for a while anyway. Also, while we’re at it, move up the playoffs a week, play first two rounds on campus, and the big 6 bowls should be 3 on NYE and 3 on NYD, rotating who gets to host semis every 3 years like it was in the 4 team era.

The Liberty Bowl has the exact same relevance now as it had 10 years ago. Same as the Potato, same as the Independence, same as the Texas etc.
The only thing messing them up right now is the portal opening in the winter.

Also:
- end tie-ins; and
- only one bowl per city
Going to Florida and playing the same Big Ten teams over and over and over again is just boring as hell. If you don't make the playoffs now, you're pretty much guaranteed to be playing one of 3 B10 teams in one of three FL cities.

I love college football and I have zero interest in watching teams who struggled to post a winning record playing each other in the postseason. The number of bowls needs to be halved.

Maybe. Non-CFP bowl viewership was actually up 14% last year.
If this was a cut from the top (I.e., by ESPN), I would have expected the LA Bowl to go after lots of others.
I imagine it’s expensive to host there, so it may have to do with that specific bowl moreso than a definite sign lots of bowls are going to shut down.

This. If anything, NIL, opt outs and the transfer portal killed bowls, not the playoff system.

How much of this is due to sports betting becoming much more mainstream?
I think this explains viewership increases in a lot of sports. It's not because the product is better that is for damn sure.

quote:Not true. Ten years ago South Carolina and Miami, two Power 5 conference teams, played in the Indy Bowl. That's happened twice in the last nine years. In 2016 NC State played Vandy & in 2023 Texas Tech played Cal. Every other year one, or both of the teams playing in it have been Group of 5 teams.

The Indy Bowl's real heyday was from 1998-2009, when every matchup was SEC vs. Big XII. It lost a lot of luster when that contract ended. That's why it seldom gets two Power 5's now.

I think having more rounds of the playoffs as home games, leaving higher end bowl games as better destinations would help.

It has the same relevance as it did in 1980 when 8-3 Purdue and 8-3 Missouri squared off.

I had two clients that were aTm players in the snow bowl. After a while, I was comfortable enough to give them shite about losing to Miss St.
I also made it on the broadcast at the end of the game and beginning of Sportscenter for having a "Sportscenter is next" sign at the Bama-Colorado game in Saban's first year. It said "Ohio State Tiger Bait" at the bottom of the sign.

It’s not just the playoffs. It’s also the portal along with the massive coaching changes. I’m curious to see what happens with Michigan and the Citrus Bowl.

I really dont see how the NO Bowl will make it past this year. They lost R & L as the sponsor. Dont have a real TV draw with conference affiliation and its on a Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 pm
