quote:

NEW: Skydiver's parachute gets caught on the tail of a plane, leaving him dangling 15,000 feet in the air over North Queensland, Australia.

As the parachutist climbed out of the plane, his reserve parachute handle got snagged on a wing flap.

The parachute then deployed and dragged him out before getting snagged on the rear wing.

According to ATSB, when the parachute got snagged, the plane dramatically reduced in speed, making the pilot believe the plane had stalled.

This is when 13 parachutists were seen bailing from the aircraft.

The snagged parachutist was able to cut all 11 lines, freeing himself from the plane before deploying his main parachute and landing. He suffered minor injuries.

The pilot then declared a mayday call and was getting ready to abandon the plane and jump himself.

As he got closer to the ground, he felt certain he could land the plane, which he did.

Baw didn’t do a proper gear check before loading

To me, this activity is not worth the risk. The helplessness of falling to your death is overwhelming to conjure.

Why did people keep jumping while he was dangling? Lucky someone didn’t crash into him.

Just imagine if aliens visited Earth and saw that certain humans willingly jump out of flying aircraft risking life and limb for an adrenaline rush and clicks and views on the world wide web.

He was dragging the plane down, and they jumped to lighten the aircraft, and to save their own asses.

I knew a guy that was in the Air Force special operations. He was assigned to the third ranger battalion at Fort Benning and had multiple deployments with them. On a training exercise in Arizona, somehow one of his parachutes was deployed inside of the aircraft. He was sucked out of a window and killed.

There wasn’t really anything they could do for him

Damaged plane = abandon ship in skydiving world when you have altitude enough to deploy your parachute

I went skydiving in Mississippi one time and the plane was such a POS that I was happy to jump out of it.

There is a skydiving school in Lodi, California that has suffered at least 20 fatalities since the early 80s. One involved an instructor and student in a tandem jump. No thanks.

My bestie is an avid skydiver, she goes out of Houston because they have a better safety record or something.

Anyone else seen the video on the Ivan McGuire incident? Chilling.

quote:

In April 1988, Ivan McGuire, a veteran skydiver with over 800 jumps, jumped from a plane at 10,500 feet to film a student and instructor's tandem jump over North Carolina. In a tragic error attributed to complacency with repetitive tasks, he exited the aircraft with only his camera equipment, which was similar in size and weight to a parachute pack, having completely forgotten to put on his actual parachute rig.

The camera footage of the fall survived, capturing his realization and final words: "Oh my God, no!". The investigation ruled the death an accident and highlighted potential oversights in safety procedures at the time, specifically the lack of a mandatory pilot or jumpmaster check to confirm all jumpers were wearing parachutes before exiting the aircraft

Skydiving seems like playing Russian Roulette. Hard to be surprised or feel sympathy when these "freak" accidents happen. It's just a matter of time...

Can you imagine the moment of realization?

I guess I'd start trying to aim for the water.
