Why DeBoer to Michigan? What am I missing?

Why is this such a hot topic? Saw on Get Up this morning that DeBoer is on the short list of candidates for the Michigan opening. This doesn’t make any sense to me why someone would take that job over Alabama. He just made the playoffs with 3 losses (1 being to FSU) - that fact in itself would be the best reason to stay in the SEC.

And they lost 4 last year.

7 losses in two seasons gets a brick in your bedroom window from Alabama fans.

It's the same arrogance that the Gumps have, that all they have to do is ask and every coach will drop whatever they are doing and come running.

Apparently he’s on the short list, heard Brohm is getting a look, and dilly. Kelly has even been floated

Kelly seemed pretty checked out at LSU. I'd be surprised if he coaches again.

DeBoer is a big name coach and people aren't certain he's in a sustainable relationship with Bama. It's hard to follow a legend.

He's coached up in Michigan before, so its not a huge stretch.

The logic is he is a midwestern guy (from S. Dakota; spent most of his career in the midwest) and the expectations at Alabama are unbearable. Many schools would be pleased with a coach getting to the cusp of the CFP (last year) and getting in this year. Alabama is not one of those schools because he's having to live in the shadow of what Saban did there.

An escape to Michigan means a return to the midwest and not having to deal with the insane level of expectations at Alabama. That may be appealing to someone looking for a better quality of life

FWIW, I don't think he leave. Just giving you the logic behind it.

Dillingham’s name keeps coming up in all these coaching searches but we keep getting told by many he’s not leaving ASU. I doubt he leaves for Michigan but I don’t think there is any way he is still there after next season. Someone will provide him the tools he doesn’t have at ASU and I believe he goes.

He shouldnt. Will turn out bad again. Youre right, he's "mentally retired."

Better fit for a South Dakota guy, but I don’t see it happening.

Jedd Fisch is probably their #1 realistic option

I don’t see ANYONE giving him more tools than the schools that have been opened this year. LSU, UF, Michigan, possibly Bame

And he's got 54 million coming his way. Some of the stories that came out about him after he was gone made it pretty apparent he was just going through the motions. He's 64 years old now too.

I think BAMA without Saban is bama. Michigan has more money in their sofa cushions than Bama will ever have. He will get long term, sustained support, with literally no cap on NIL spending. (The gumps won't admit, or realize, their boosters do not have the appetite or resources to keep up with the some of the other big-time programs.

He can stay a few more years, but his hand will be forced sooner or later if he wants to stay in major football. The big 10 and SEC are going to rule the land within the next 5-6 years, even more so than they do now.

Yeah, I think he believed just recruiting the talent would let him live some "executive head coach" level and be hands off.

Because leaving on your own terms to a place of your choosing is better than being forced onto the coaching carousel against your will. Because if he has interest in Michigan it is open now, but would likely be off the table if he stays put.

I don’t see a long term future for anyone at Alabama who can’t replicate Sabans success, which is unrealistic. Bama has yet to realize that coaches win there despite the program. It took literally the two best coaches of all time to win there. Deboer is not that and he could be out before the end of next year. Some want him gone now, and they’re in the playoffs. I think I’d be looking hard at Michigan too.

DeBoer likes Alabama, believe it or not. The fan don’t like 7 (8 after the playoff loss) in his 2 years. I don’t think he’s done a bad job outside of the FSU game when the team was woefully unprepared.

Someone to watch is Clark Lea. He coached there under BK at Notre Dame for 4 years. I know he played at Vanderbilt and just signed an extension, but it’s the Michigan job.

It doesn't make any sense from a football standpoint, but it could be one of the few jobs that he'd leave Bama for, if he is struggling with the pressure of his current job.

I have no idea where his head actually is, and if he has any interest in Michigan. But it seems that a lot of people think they can read his mind. We'll see if they've guessed right, but I'd be pretty surprised to see him leave. Michigan can certainly pay whatever he wants, if that's a higher priority for him.

Because Chicken said so. The more the carousel goes round and round, the more Chicken wins.
