Raul Malo, the celebrated co-founder and vocalist of the Grammy-winning band The Mavericks, passed away on Monday at the age of 60. The band’s representatives confirmed that he lost his battle with cancer. Known for his powerful and emotionally charged voice, Malo was affectionately referred to as “El Maestro” by his fans and colleagues. LINK

Raul Malo had an incredible voice. I was obsessed with the What a Crying Shame album back in the 90s. I listened to it all the time and every song was really good.

what an amazing voice and apparently an all around great person. Saw them in a side tent at ACL festival years ago. Just me and about 100 people - they were awesome.

What a loss - the man had a generational voice. My wife and I saw them 7 times over the last few years. Every show was amazing. An eclectic mix of Cuban/latin, blues, rockabilly, country, etc. Saw them in Baton Rouge and San Antonio in 2025 - so glad we did. For those who never saw him live, check out some videos. So sad to lose him so young, would have likely seen him another 7 times. Really sad about this one.

Terrible news. He was truly a wonderful vocalist. Was able to see them live 6 times and met him once. Last saw him in BR in February of this year. He had seemingly beaten colon cancer when brain cancer called LMD hit him. Type of spread of the original cancer and pretty rare. Very sad.

I saw him (The Mavericks) play in the street in Austin for the first or second South by Southwest in the early ‘90s. Also saw him open for Dwight this summer. He was so joyful and put on a great show.
