If you aren't born here, you really shouldn't be allowed to hold public office.

I would be okay with a "born a citizen" requirement for US Congress, President, and SCOTUS. We already have that requirement for the presidency.

ETA: What I mean by that is I wouldn't support preventing someone born overseas on a military base or to American citizen parents working overseas from running for federal office.

1 parent should have to be born in the US as well. For us to be a melting pot our culture has to be hot enough and the immigrants need to have to interact with Americans regularly. The immigrants that come and make their own communities are not assimilating.

Pffft. Next thing you'll probably say is that you can't marry your brother!

Crazy? Probably not. But definitely silly.

John is born in England, to two English parents. His family immigrates to the US when John is one month old. Both parents become naturalized US citizens before John ever starts elementary school, making John a US citizen as well (starting at age 5). John graduates from American high school and college. He serves in the US military and later in the reserves. He retires from the Reserves as a full colonel.

And you contend that Col. John should not be eligible to serve on his town council, sixty years after becoming a citizen?

Nope. Also, if you paid not federal income tax you should NOT get to vote.

I wouldn’t say it’s crazy, but it’s a bad idea. It abridges the right of the people to their chosen representation for no good reason.

Yes. You are crazy to disagree with the Founders this extremely.

Yet another attempt to separate citizens into "us" vs "them".

Grandparents rule.

Until all 4 of your grandparents were born here, you aren't actually American.

Yes, rules are rules. We cant make an exception for every tom dick and harry that thinks he should get preferential treatment. You give an inch, people take a mile.

They get paid to fight. And that's part of the process of coming here.

Why should I be excluded?

If people are net taxpayers, they should get a say.
