I've carried a Leatherman Skeletool for 10 years now. I don't think I could ever go back to just a pocketknife. It carries like one, though.

not saying it's the best, just MY favorite: Leatherman Wave

+1 on the Leatherman wave and Leatherman.
Work bought Gerbers and Sogs at one point but always went back to the Leatherman due to the ergonomics.

Leatherman Surge. Spend the extra $20.
I carry one every day. It has a pocket clip and carries like a medium size pocket knife.
I honestly don't know people carry a knife only when we have the technology to carry a Surge every day. I can't fathom carrying every day with just a knife. You don't know how much you need a pair of pliers, wire cutters, a limb saw and a pair of scissors until you carry them in your pocket every day. I can cut cordage with my serrated blade, saw limbs to clear a shooting lane with the limb saw, then use the scissors and file to cut and shape up my nails into lovely presentation-level shape while I wait for a big ol buck.
Leatherman Surge. Source: a guy who works the land every day and has carried it for years after it came out and replaced the older, obsolete model Leatherman. I keep an extra set when I inevitably loose one trying to lip a big ol bass with the pliers to keep double treble hooks out of my hand. Do it. You won't go back.

I'm rarely outside of walking distance from any of the things a multi-tool like a leatherman has to offer, probably a great thing to keep in a bag or truck though

I have a few. I's say the Gerber 600 is my favorite, I picked a couple up off Ebay awhile back. They were surplused from the Kentucky State Police or something like that, $15 for the black (I think it's black nitride). I've handled the stainless, it's not as nice as the nitride

I picked a couple of these up recently, Utica Multi-tool. They seem well made. I like that it has a Malaysian crest on it, makes it unique.
LINK
You can spend more and get them with a rubberized case
LINK
What I ended up doing for cases, somebody had a milsurp deal on white leather dress magazine holsters (I think they were a buck or 2 apiece at the time, fits a standard Beretta 92 mag. I bought about 10
, have used them for magazines, and they fit a multitool pretty nicely. Good to stick on a belt, or just to store them)
