Plant meaning refineries/industrial construction not the other type of plants.

Any of y'all know anything about planners? What they do, what type of background they typically have prior to becoming one, etc.

Just interested.

Planners up here NWI make the same as the trades, and majority come from trades.

Is that the guy who schedules the times to put the "In A Meeting" sign on the door so they can cook a jambalaya, causing Birdseed and his crew to have to go rogue and pull wrenches without a permit?

You mean a scheduler? I made $70k doing scheduling on a plant out of college back in 2018. Worked 4-10s and posted on message boards all day.

He's the guy who plans a job for me to rebuild a pump, but orders the wrong mechanical seal, forgets one of the bearings and orders no oil seals. Then its my job to tear the pump apart and hope I can find the parts I need somewhere in the shop

Pretty much sums it up. He’s also someone’s son or brother in law so if you don’t have that connection, you are probably SOL.

Where I was the planner/scheduler usually was a guy that had worked in the field as an i&c/mechanic or even operator. Someone who already knew the plant and its equipment. And was familiar with the scheduling program and usually the guys they were scheduling work for. I don’t remember the pay but it was about what lower level supervisors made - guessing at 90plus

Contractor maintenance - 35-50hr
Contractor t/a - 40-60hr

Hard hire maint or t/a - 50-80hr

Schedulers - name your price if you’re good. 50-80 would be normal. Not shocked when a top tier guy demands 100 if an outage falls behind on path and needs an ace to come in and get them back in the flow.

That’s just a rough out. Your model may vary. Don’t get upset when Brock pays lower or you see a guy work for Bones making top pay.

Get out of here. The best planner I have known was contract and made $70/hr in Louisiana. He literally handled all field material and was the lead planner.

This is accurate. A good client of mine has been a planner for about 10 years and he's pulling in about $130k working 4/10s.

South Louisiana and Texas I bet you’re looking at $45 - $55 / hr with a decent opportunity for overtime.

Planners will take a maintenance work order and build a work package that is used by technicians and operators to guide execution of the work order, and also assist in building a suitable energy isolation tagout. To produce the work package, a planner will gather all necessary parts and field information that is required for work. The planners use existing procedures and specifications to build their package and thus the work is completed accurately.
