How do you think the convo between Lane and Baker went to get him to stay?

It had to have been about us being a competitor as soon as next year, right? Probably told him that he won’t have to carry the team on his shoulders any more.

I’m fricking pumped for next season. Let’s go win another natty in baseball, and get this football team rolling.

ETA: Absolutely cannot wait to see what Lane does in the portal.

A mix between being in contention for a natty, Baker's ole lady wanting family to stay, and $$$

Simple...we will match offer

2nd...You fail at Tulane, and your reputation is completely shot. You'll be a journeyman DC for years after that. If you fail, fail at a major, not Tulane

This is actually a pretty important, but not often thought about point.

When a P4 coordinator becomes a G5 head coache and flame out it usually sets their coaching career back for 5-10 years. Oftentimes they end up as a coordinator at a G5 school or position coach at a P4 school. If they are lucky they get picked up by a P4 school as a coordinator.

When they go from P4 Coordinator to P4 head coach and flame out they still often get G4 head coaching jobs or P4 coordinator jobs.

He’s only called plays for 4 years. I’m sure Lane told him about his own journey and how much you can learn under different head coaches, both good and bad, to really develop your own identity and how to make your porgram your own. The money and family situation helped. But I bet the pitch focused on him becoming a better head coach later and was more of a “this is better for your long-term career and success as a HC.” Especially if we have championship success here.

Blake’s coached under some good coaches, but never seen what a championship team looks like. That was no doubt invaluable for Lane and why he keeps opportunities. The nepotism has worn off. The watching 1st hand how Pete Carrol and Nick Saban develop championship teams and maintain championship programs is more important. Have to be good at your side of the ball, obviously, which they both are. But Baker is still learning and is only getting better. Like I said, he’s only been calling plays for 4 years.

Win a Natty or even compete for it and the offers will improve immensely.

People may be missing the point that was mentioned earlier regarding family is tired of moving. He may be taking one for the home team for another yr or two. If he can get a P4 job from LSU service then that eliminates a move to G5 before P4.

Yeah man. Without direct knowledge, im sure a couple Tulane players will follow coach. Probably a few more graduate. Etc
Its not like they're a portal juggernaut, so he'd be in a bind next year and after.
Then what?
Just seems like way way way too much downside, compared to any upside

I think it came down to the end goal for Baker. He has massive potential as a future head coach. If the goal was to become Tulanes head coach, then go. If the goal is to become the HC at a major program competing at the highest level and make $8mm a year… then stay at lsu and compete for Nattys with Kiffin and he will have his pick of jobs.

Going to Tulane is a higher risk for the same reward. No offense to Tulane, because I love seeing them doing well and proud of that program. But it could very easily go bad. Especially if they didn’t offer him the NIL budget he wanted. If it does go bad, you set back your career a minimum of 3-5 years.

You will be the highest paid DC if you stay and Kiffin gives his DCs full control of the defensive side. And, we’ve got some monsters coming in. He finally has an elite HC to coach under and learn from. Especially on the recruiting side. It’s a great opportunity for him to learn under a high level coach. And someone that made mistakes when he was Bakers age and learned from it.

Add in the fact the wife and family are very happy in BR and tired of moving… it just makes too much sense to stay instead of risking it all at Tulane.

With the talent we have coming in on that side of the ball he would have been dumb to leave.

This is the right answer.

I wonder where Davey is going to be soon.

He can come replace Baker when he inevitably moves on.

I learned a lot from being around great defensive minds; you can learn a lot from being around me. That will help you be a better head coach.
