Fuller deservers honorable mention. Charles Alexander, not in my opinion. He was good but he had no freaking moves at all. My best memory of him was him was him busting into the open right up the middle. He altered his path a bit when he was 10 yards down field with nobody around him. He changed paths only about 15 degrees or so and he almost lost his footing and fell down.
My memory may be a bit flawed about his abilities because I was pretty young at that time but that play really sticks with me.

LSU has a great history of top running backs, tough to pick a #1 for that very reason...different eras. The best could easily be Steve van Buren- he was a 'beast' in his day, also had a great NFL career. He was so tough they had to hold him out of practice, he was hurting the defensive players!!

Yeah, that is unreal alright - jeez, what a horse. He was like a Jacob Hester, only a little taller. Wasn't wanting to include him in the discussion, though, which is why I said "modern era". Cannon is the man for the ages - as a Heisman winner you can't argue against that.
I still say Dalton was next.

i think he (Dalton) was my FAVORITE running back ever at LSU, and i believe that he was one of the best 2 or 3 ever at LSU....

Seriously, no one mentioned Harvey Williams?

Faulk has had a pretty solid career.
No doubt. But he hasn't been an every down back like Hilliard was for a couple of his years with the Saints. I can remember some of his games against the 49ers.....those hard hitting match-ups when SF was so good. Hilliard would bust through the line and run over people so hard, and then when he got up he ALWAYS walked back to the huddle so slowly - like he was injured. You just know he was saying "holy shite that hurt".
One more story - I can remember as a kid being down near the field before a game at TS at the bottom of the stairs where the players come out of the tunnel. They were lined up about to run through the goal posts and I snapped a picture of Hilliard from behind from ~ 10 feet. To this day I have the picture, and when I look at it I am still most amazed at his calves....they looked like he had put a tennis ball in the back of each of his socks. Unreal. Those were good times! Hilliard and James!!!!

Harvey williams...catch 22. he was good.
but not in the top 5 of all time
best RB ever, at my young age of 3+ decades I'd have to go with Kevin Faulk. I saw him juke 2 corners at ole miss one year and all he did was do his shimmy shake and they both about broke their ankles and missed him completely. obviously the stats speak for themselves.

There was this black fry cook that beat out Billy Cannon in his prime in a foot race, edging him out at the end, despite having a bum knee. It was portrayed in some movie with Dennis Kucinich, or some other actor. Did we ever recruit that guy, or was that before desegregation?

Dennis Quaid.....i wasn't sure if that was a true story or not.

I still say that Dalton Hilliard is the most amazing and effective RB I have ever seen at LSU during modern times
He did some great things w/ LSU and for a short time w/ the Saints. I was a big fan.
But, I'll bite. Why has Auburn produced such an enormous stable of running backs over the years?

I'll go with Kevin Faulk as well. He brought LSU out of the dark days of the early 90's all on his own.
I was there for everyone of his games even though many were still warming up to Dinardo. He was the most exciting player that I have ever seen. And that dude could catch better than most receivers we have ever had.

Cannon ran a 9.4 100 yds (hand timed) . . .not 9.9
He was one of the few players of that era who could still play the same position in today's game . . .his size and speed combination is still a rarity . . .and, this was before the era of scientific weight training

I had a friend whose wife was "exposed" to C.C.'s raw talent that day. Not to mention, I have two daughters of my own. He is DISQUALIFIED from discussion of the best ever (nevermind production for only a few games and the huge, npi, unfulfilled potential).

It's simple...
1. Faulk
2. Cannon
1. Faulk
2. Cannon

If you're from the Stephen Peterman club, it's good enough for me. I thought he was one of the most underated lineman, if not players at LSU, that I can recall.
If not, nevermind.
