Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), opens new tab this month raised prices of certain memory chips - now in short supply due to the global race to build AI data centres - by as much as 60% compared to September, two people with knowledge of the hikes said.

Soaring prices for these memory chips, which are mainly used in servers, are likely to add to stress for big companies building out data infrastructure. They also threaten to increase the costs of other products like smartphones and computers in which they are also used.
Obviously RAM prices will probably affect all segments including consumer electronics, automobiles, and appliances.

IDC’s predictions echo earlier warnings from Counterpoint Research, which also flagged potential price hikes on phones due to the memory shortage. “We are talking here about big increases to smartphone BoMs [bill of materials]—upwards of 15% in the case of some models —across the key mid-to-high-end segment

Once they figure out they can't profit off these massive meme generator data centers you are going to see some serious shite

Or when software that can detect AI catches up so people have to actually write emails / papers themselves or be exposed as a lazy POS.

Packing programs and apps with AI that I don’t want or use is annoying as hell. The new Adobe Acrobat .pdf reader has a mandatory AI add on that I can’t figure out how to turn off. I don’t use it so the only thing it does is slow down start up and functions.
I would be just fine with AI enabled and non-AI enabled smartphones, laptops and other devices. Make it an option so I can opt out.

I pay $20/month for chatgpt.
Its worth it when you want to know how certain laws apply to specific situations.

I'm no lawyer but I'd be curious to know how using material generated by AI holds up from a legal standpoint being that we know it can be manipulated to give the desired result. My guess is that you'd have to end up doing the research anyway to back up any conclusion you get from it.
Curious times.

They would need you/ people like you to pay $2000 a month for it to make back the costs of the infrastructure.

Didn't google, facebook, twitter, etc, etc operate at a lose at first?
ChatGPT brought in $5.5 Billion last year. They still operated at a loss, but I pay the minimum of what they offer. To have its maximum capabilities its over $200 a month, but AI isn't going away. There will be some that fail, but its not going away.

This is for a personal situation, but I created a project on ChatGPT and I feed it all legal documents for this situation. I can ask for it to summaries something and it dumbs it down.
I can ask it how does what I have apply to certain situations. If you have to communicate something to someone it will tell you exactly how you need to word it.
If anyone is getting divorced, ask it about the divorce laws in your state. Give it the details. What you owned before marriage, things yall bought while married, your financial situation and it will break it down for you, You still need a lawyer, but it can help you make better decisions before even contacting a lawyer.

Smart phones use different memory modules than servers and desktops. Also a 16GB smart phone ram module is around $7. So shouldn't have much if any price differences as most OEMs have 300% margins.

Lol if you dont think these OEMs are going to keep their margins.
Micron is one of basically 3 memory manufacturers in the world. Does not matter how it is packaged.
Flash memory already starting to creep up now as well. Supplier costs already up 20%

I don’t care.
This is my last smartphone. Once this one shits the bed I’m done. Going back to flip. Not a new flip. Just the oldest flip phone still compatible.
After that shits the bed I’m done.
Need a push notification? Can’t need the service that badly. Need someone to text me a link? Sorry, frick you. QR code? Eat my ballsack.

Even the dumbest of phones still require RAM and flash memory.
Your fridge, garage door motor, washing machine, etc...
Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix are the big 3. They have all decided to bypass consumer needs for AI. The profit is there.
These massive AI datacenter rollout will be driving up the costs of everything

I don’t care.
I’ll pay property taxes and starve to death until I figure out how to raise chickens and vegetables.
I’m about fed up with all this stuff. I know how to use it all very well. It’s just nonsense.

I mean not sure anyone is getting by without appliances these days... or HVAC

I like to think of them more as DumbPhones. I haven’t used my phone to solve the navier stokes but I have watched a lot of people fall off ladders and roofs, along with a lot of cute kitten videos.

At this point in time AI's ability to play attorney is woefully inadequate and wrong as often as it is kinda right.

Keep doubling down ...
Just out of curiosity I just checked DigiKey for the lowest price DDR in stock, you know soldered down BGAs commonly found in a cell phone these days
35 bucks... I guess it has gone up a lot since your 7 dollar quote
There are some obscure ones out there for "7 dollars" but zero stock and obsolete. With no plans to stock...
Cheapest you can buy today is 35
