Were ESPN & the national media this angry about Saban entertaining the Bama offer in 2006?

He was still coaching the Dolphins while entertaining Bama’s offers and negotiating with them.
Bama is a media darling though, so they probably applauded Saban and Bama for doing what they did.
I hate hypocrisy, and ESPN and its cronies are full of it.

Hell no. It was a match made in heaven then.

I don't remember but it is apples to oranges. The impacts are nowhere near the same bc NFL has a draft in April while in college you have recruiting and the portal

I watched a clip a few minutes ago of Van Pelt whining to Rece Davis. Basically saying, LK is the husband who slept with the neighbor, but asks if he can stay for christmas for the kids. Van Pelt said, "Hell no, GTFO".
I find this entertaining because Tulane is under an identical situation. Except, in Van Pelt and ESPN's eyes, Sumrall, who also is sleeping with the neighbor, is allowed to stay because clearly, the neighbor is way hotter than the old wife. That is the rationale with them.

Yeah they crushed him, because Saban was adamant that he wasn't thinking about the Alabama job and went so far as to say the media was insulting his integrity to even suggest it, and then he took the job. They slammed the hell out of him, called him Suitcase Saban. But it didn't last that long.
Watch the NFLN's "Top 10 Coaches who should've stayed in College." but keep in mind that it was filmed almost 20 years ago.

Now do Tulane and Florida.

pretty much exactly the same as Kiffin to LSU. I guess they don't care about Tulane...no other explanation

If Kiffin would’ve gone to Gainesville this would be national news and a match made in heaven.

Yes. People were pissed because he specifically said "I will not be the Alabama head coach" when he was with the Dolphins.

This is what I remember. Can't remember if it was Wilbon or someone else who called him a snake. LeBatard trashed Saban constantly.

The South Florida media went scorched earth on Saban. Hank Goldberg called him “the biggest piece of shite to ever come to Miami.”
Posted on 12/2/25 at 11:20 am to cbree88
Uh yeah. He was trashed for weeks when this all transpired.
Probably worse than Kiffin, he made Miami a bigger mess than it already was and rolled the frick out after saying he wasn’t going to. It was ugly ugly.
Lots of people say that’s why he never entertained another nfl job.

He was savaged for telling the Sheila’s he was staying then Shula gets fired at bama and nick took his jog- yeah it was filthy but it was the Bama AD that arranged all of that- the shills don’t think muck of the sabans.

Yes, they shat on him for failing and quitting on the NFL
Same with Bobby Petrino

Social media wasn't really a thing then like it is now. And the media did kill him when he accepted the job after saying he wasn't going to take it but it is not the same. Some defended him and some killed him for it only because he lied but none of them were mad he actually took it just that he lied basically when he said he wasn't going to take it and then he turned around and took it.

Yes, they were all over Saban at that time. Many accusations being thrown about on sports media.
