For a general all-around North American hunting rifle what are the OB's opinions on .308 vs 6.5 PRC.

Considerations:
-500-600 yds max hunting range (most between 300-500 yds). No desire for target shooting
-mainly used for deer and packing for elk
-will be suppressed
-fella does not currently own a .308(my opinion is a .308 is a must have in cabinet)

I've given him pros and cons to both but wanted some opinions in case I missed anything

I agree with having a 308 in the cabinet but if 500-600yd is the goal then a 6.5 prc gets the nod due to BC and ability to buck the wind better.

7mm08 is the correct answer 22 inch barrel 2750 per second 150 grain

Affective on Elk at that range
Tons of packable options
Better balistics than 308
deadly on white tail.

instead of 6.5 Prc just get a 270

Shot placement is most important with these cailbers

Fear the man with only one rifle.

500-600 would be MAX shot and very rare for him. Maybe once every few years at an elk.

Neither of those honestly. If elk is in the picture, Minimum would be a 7mm PRC or 7mm mag.
.30-06 would be the true caliber for all of north america or the .300 mag. If you want you could go to .300 prc.

Sorry, I should have added, he doesn't want the recoil of the magnums or 30-06.

.308 is ubiquitous and easy to find.

If it’s good enough to rock out on 2 legged bandits with an M240, it’s good enough for 4 legged critters in lower 48.

I have two 6.5 PRC's and love both.

Suppressor with help with the recoil.

He’s set on one of these cartridges, he’s been shooting a 300 mag for awhile and wants something lighter as he ages

Either of those calibers are fine. People planning for 500-600 yard shots when buying a hunting rifle baffle me. Same with adding a suppressor to a hunting rifle that you might shoot a couple times per year.

Care to explain? If you're hunting regularly involves 5-600 yard shots it would be smart?

I suppress every single rifle I own, do not care to shoot one not suppressed. But I shoot them hundreds of times a year so...IMO not having a suppressor is silly.

If you've never shot a suppressed hunting rifle then you wouldn't understand. You will never go back to unsuppressed.

A very small percentage of hunting shots are 500 yards. Very small

In regard to the suppressor, the extra length and weight are working against you in a hunting scenario. Just one more thing to deal with. I understand the usefulness of reducing sound, but for most hunting scenarios a pair of earplugs/muffs mitigate the sound and are extremely less cumbersome.

Just get the barrel cut and threaded.

if you dont want 30-06, get an accurate 308 and be done with it.

Titanium suppressor solves the weight issue, plus the little extra weight on the end of the barrel probably improves accuracy and felt recoil.

I like the shorter barrel necessary for the .308 vs the 6.5 requirement with regards to adding the suppressor in this scenario (another + for the 308).

I've never encountered an issue from weight or length in a hunting situation due to being suppressed.

That's my thoughts as well, get good with that 308 and he's golden.
