I guess they could have let Lane stay and coach, but how much does that actually help them in recruiting and maintaining the program into 2026 and beyond when everybody would know he was leaving (whether it's today or a bit later in December)?

Ole Miss isn’t the bad guy here, honestly.

They could have not behaved like a bunch of spoiled whiny entitled brats.

They shouldn't have been as public as they were with their ultimatums to Kiffin/staff, but outside of that there isn't really anything they could have done differently.

The notion that letting him stay in the building for a month after he took the LSU job was ever an option is laughable.

Well for starters, "Playoff Round 1 Loser" sounds better than "SEC West Co-champs"

I don’t think they could have or should have done anything differently

They had a great coach, hoped he would stay, got burned

Dirty business. shite happens.

There are no real bad guys here. It's a bad situation because of the NCAA CFB calendar.

Whoever set up the absolutely retarded signing day/portal window timeline is the real villain.

We would be in the same position we are now. Just with even less time to actually hire our next coach.

At the end of the day, we may have won a playoff game or two but retaining Kiffin for another month only sets the program back even more.

Because no other coach is going to take the Ole Miss job as long as it’s not officially open.

I know that’s a wild and crazy illogical “melt Reb” take but that’s the decision Keith Carter had to make

This cannot be stressed enough.

It was never a serious option.

Nothing different really.

Maybe canned him a day or two sooner.

I agree with you here.

Someone inevitably was going to get fricked by the current college football system with the timeline of playoffs, portal, etc. and unfortunately for Ole Miss it happened to be them.

They did what was necessary. If OM let him stay, they would be allowing the enemy in house, recruiting their coaches and players.

Let it play out with no ultimatums etc. No deadlines. Lane would have just kept coaching in the playoffs. Try and get lucky and go on a run and that make him want to stay. He wouldn't have signed anything official for LSU in the meantime which may have resulted in LSU backing away in time.

It’s a crappy situation and not sure what they could have done differently at least nothing strategic. Perhaps, they could have more publicly separated with Kiffin, but their business now must be about player and coach retention as they move into the playoffs. I am sure they know whether the DC or Judge will be in interim if not new head coach.

Shoulda been more pressing with timeline. They probably needed to fire him during the bye week if they knew he was gone.

Kiffin is ultimately responsible for all of this, he didn’t have to take another job, he chose to, and I don’t think he really cares what happens next. Which is fine by me since he wears it on his sleeve.
