What is the precedent for a head coach being allowed to coach in the playoffs?

I don't think there is one.

I don't even remember one being allowed to coach in a high profile bowl game.

Didn’t Washington let their guy before he went to bama?

At what point do you stop making threads? Have you not embarrassed yourself enough?

Bo Pelini was allowed to coach LSU's championship game as defensive coordinator in January 2008 before moving to Nebraska

Going way back, Bill Arnsparger announced after the Tulane game that he was leaving LSU to become the Florida AD. He stayed on to "coach" the team in the Sugar Bowl (I put that in quotation marks because it was well known he could care less about winning bowl games).

Kirby Smart coached in the NCG after being named UGA head coach on Dec 6.

Playoffs are so new to college football and bowl games were mostly meaningless, haven't had a head coach be in this scenario before.

The only HC to make the CFP (CFP began in 2014) to coach a different college team the next year is Kalen Deboer.

Before the 2024 season, no HC that made the CFP left his team before the following season.

After the 2023 season KD left for UW for Bama, Harbaugh left UM for the NFL, and Saban retired.
