On playoff coaching. So why wouldn’t Lane announce he’s leaving? Should have nothing to do with his playoff discussion

Because he might be allowed to coach the SEC Championship game and they are waiting to see if Auburn wins

Because if they’re at an impasse he’s going to wait to see if that impasse includes the SEC title game I’d imagine.

He was a famous ganster in the 30s, screwed over by a woman in a red dress.

I don't think it's clear that Lane has explicitly said the words I am leaving for LSU.

It sounds more like Lane continues to be non-committal which OM is interpreting as leaving.

Lane is probably doing a lot of "If I was to leave"

Let’s assume he does indeed intend to come to LSU. There are two scenarios for where things stand right now:

1. He either intends to sign the MOU soon or has already signed it, and he told the Ole Miss AD he was leaving but still wanted to coach in the playoffs.

2. He hasn’t signed the MOU yet, and he told the Ole Miss AD he was leaning toward leaving but still wanted to coach in the playoffs.

These scenarios are dramatically different.

In scenario #1 he’s effectively terminated his contract with Ole Miss. If Ole Miss doesn’t want him to continue coaching through the CFP, they just say “no” and that’s that. And I would agree, there’s not much reason to delay announcement.

In scenario #2 he’s effectively terminated hasn’t terminated his contract with Ole Miss. Ole Miss can’t fire him because then they’d have to pay his buyout. They are stuck until he officially tells him he’s leaving. Meanwhile LSU is also stuck in limbo because he can still change his mind. Ole Miss could break the stalemate by suspending him. Or LSU could say “sign the MOU or we move on to the next guy.” But if neither of those things happen, he could theoretically drag it out through the CFP and nobody would be able to announce anything.
