Per their On3 site

2 defensive minded coaches paired up together who may not have the same philosophy

If Durkin leaves then there will be major attrition, especially on defense

Or they hire someone that may want to keep Durkin and keep the roster mostly intact

Or hire Durkin and be done with it

They’re so screwed. Telling a coach you have to keep this guy? I’m sure that’ll go well.

Logic wise, if Sumrall doesn't want to be told to keep Durkin at AU, then isn't he being told to keep Golding at Ole Miss?

My guess is he sees Durkin as the usurper type, which he is

That Golding stuff at Ole Miss is all cope. They would let their next head coach pick the DC.

Is there still some banker/businessperson that the head coach must kowtow to?

Forcing a DC on a head coach is sub-optimal. Just hire Durkin.

I was bitching about this last week when it was floated the all candidates had agreed Faulker out of GA Tech as the OC. I wondered what he was being hired for if he has no say in the hiring of his coordinators. The response I received was maybe the AD didn't trust him not to bring over his staff from Tulane which dumbfounded me because WTF are you hiring a guy if you don't trust his judgment

Just promote Durkin and hire Faulkner for OC. Why hire Sumrall if you don’t trust him to make hires?

I think there would be a collective meltdown if Durkin was promoted to HC. He's liked well enough as a DC and many believe if he bolts, the incoming class goes up in smoke.

Auburn was always going to screw this up as long as some of their powerful boosters wanted Durkin. Those people would never hesitate to sabotage and undermine other candidates before or after they accepted the job just to prove they were right and their guy should’ve gotten the gig. Way too many people think they are important there, a tale as old as time.

Durkin has two more years on his three year contract. He doesn’t have to stay, but if he goes then someone has to pay that.

It doesn’t seem to occur to many that maybe the new coach wants him to stay.

Sumrall would have the exact same problem at OM with Golding. For some reason, OM has married themselves to Golding. And are gonna try to make the next coach adopt his philosophy and keep him as DC. If Kiffin leaves.

If Kiffin comes to LSU and Sumrall moves from Tulane, there is a good chance that Blake Baker will get the Tulane job and Golding will follow Kiffin to come back home to Louisiana.
