it's regarded as one of THE American foods, yet most fries are poorly cooked, mushy, nasty pieces of potato. Is there any other food so strongly identified with a country or area that is so routinely prepared so poorly in the native area?

I have a feeling this thread will spiral out of control into a Johnny's pizza debate then devolve into a BR chain restaurant free for all.

Apple Pie or Cherry Pie

I would suggest that the native region is France, even if called by a different name? I've had some damn good french fries in french restaurants.

the biggest problem i find with frensh fries is most people use frozen fries

when they are cooked and prepped right few things can beat a homemade handcut french fry.....ala outback

of course they are good in french restaurants. they pay more attention to detail in food generally.

when you think of "french food" it's croissants, complex sauces, stinky cheese, wine, etc....not fries/pommes frites.

when you think of "american" food many think of burgers, fries, hot dog, apple pie, etc.

french fries are distinctly more american than french, despite their name.

The Belgians are pretty pissed that the French have somehow been credited with the fried potato. The Belgians fry theirs twice and serve them with great spiced mayo dips. Belgian frittes get the

Beer - only America could produce something as offensive as Bud Light Lime and Michelob Ultra

Hot Dogs - white, tasteless bread surrounding a red, tasteless but salty tube of "meat"

Chili - usually the difference between this and canned dog food is, um, well, not a whole lot

Pizza - Domino's, Pizza Hut, Tombstone, Red Baron, et al are all guilty of screwing this up

The Hamburger - 12 billion sold and all terrible

Fish Sticks - just another vehicle for ketchup and tartar sauce and not really about fish at all

American Cheese - bland, shiny, plastic, and doesn't have an expiration date

Thoughts?

Belgian fries are great. They go great with a heaping plate of fresh mussels.

Awesome. We lived in Belgium for a while when I was a kid, my dad absolutely loves frites and moules. I'll have to tell him about this place.

The french fry is simply a Fat and Salt Delivery System. Gave them up in the 70s. Never missed them. Now I do miss cheese. Gave that up in the 90s.

The majority of the American public is more concerned with quantity than quality...so restaurants use frozen crap to save on overhead and offer larger portions of dishes at lower prices.

Let's just be honest with each other...the vast majority of Americans are blissfully content with strip malls, frozen fries, Dominos Pizza and other crap such as this...this is the world we dwell in...eating out and cooking are an afterthought to most Americans and the quality of the vast majority of restaurants reflects this reality.
