As excited as potentially getting lane is, it does also feel we didn’t learn our lesson

We went big gsme hunting again this coaching search and about to commit another massive contract to a quote on quote “ proven coach”. Dillingham seemed like the only young up snd comer that we were connected too during this search. Does the BOS simply think LSU is too big of a program to take a chance on a up and comer assistant or G5 guy?

If we had a consistent peak level run like OU had under stoops or what OSU has essentially had with Meyer and before Meyer even, or Saban at Bama, or the long run Bk had a ND…. I could easily see us hiring an assistant from within (Lincoln Riley, Ryan Day) or one that has gone elsewhere but qualified to come back (Venables at OU). We’ve been so up and down that that has not been an option.

If Kiffin or another whale can stabilize this program like those elite coach’s, then we’ll have a future farm of guys likely to take over in 6-7 years if something were to happen.

Too much at stake, economically, to not go for the most sure option. 14 mil a year vs 6 mil a year is peanuts when talking about your program consistently hosting playoff games vs sitting out. Those games are said to be worth $40m or so to your school and local economy.

I see your point, but Lane and Kelly are 2 different animals. Lane has shown the ability to excel in a portal/nil era of football. He is also 9 years younger than him, and in much better health than Kelly was when taking the job. In addition, he is has been playing an SEC schedule for the last 6 years.

Agreed. If Kiffin does come its going to be a disaster. Especially bringing orgeron back around this place.

Kelly 10 years ago would likely have been a hungrier coach. This version of Kelly was lazy and satisfied

Disaster? Really? You seriously think Lane is that bad of a coach? None of us can tell the future, but I’d bet we win a lot of games. I’d also bet our offense will be potent. I have no idea if he will live up to the very high expectations. That’s a fair criticism, but a disaster is a strong word.

Why take a chance when you can hire a sure thing that is currently winning in the SEC?

False I’ve been consistent of course I wanted kiffin but I’ve always been someone open to us taking a chance on a hungry up and comer the Kelly fiasco showed me that the “ big name “ coach is not a guaranteed success but some folks in the comments mentioned a good point about kiffin having more successful in the NIL era and being younger/hungrier than Kelly was when he was hired

You will pay at least 9 million to get a 35 year old coach with no SEC experience

I really like Dilly

But come on people- Lanes resume is superior to even Nick Sabans at age 50!!!

Think!

Was Kelly not also a sure thing? That’s my thing over the last 15 years, it seems the young up and comer is a bigger blueprint for success than a big name coach. Dan lanning at Oregon , freeman at ND, Kirby at Georgia , Kenny Dillingham at ASU, day at OSU, Elko at A&M

Key question for this contract is whether it’s all guaranteed like Kelly’s is/was. No shocker that if you’re pulling a top name coach you will be paying in the 10-12mil a year range. All guaranteed w/o performance-based accountability clauses is hopefully the aspect we’re not repeating.

No, he was at Notre Dame under completely different circumstances. Lane is essentially under the same circumstances at Ole Miss as he will be at LSU.

Yeah it’s gonna be SOOO disastrous racking up 10 and 11 win seasons and being a fixture in the playoffs year in and year out.
