Saban left for LSU immediately

While the OM folks are bashing Kiffin at the thought of him leaving before the playoffs, if he does leave it’s really no different than a lot of coaches have done, like Saban bolting for LSU before Michigan State’s bowl game in a season he’d brought them unprecedented success. They’d beaten Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State in the same season for the first time ever. None of his assistants followed him to BR, and MSU wound up beating highly-ranked Florida in the bowl.
So it’s not that unusual for a coach to leave for a big job before the bowl games or playoff. So if Kiffin leaves, it’s probably because he thinks this Ole Miss team, although having a great season to this point, wouldn’t stand up through the whole playoff gauntlet because they’re not that great on defense or in the trenches. He probably believes they’ve been living on borrowed time and probably won’t win the natty.
He probably believes he has a better chance at sustained success at a school like LSU or Florida.

Michigan state wasn’t in the midst of a playoff run…oh, and they’re Michigan state.

Well there is an unbelievable amount of history that proves this, and last years portal rankings that prove it even further.

That’s the only reason I see him leaving for LSU or Florida, sustained success. Pretty big reason.

The deadline Ole Miss set for him works perfectly for whoever gets him - whether it's LSU or UF. He has to tell them one way or another by the Egg Bowl. If he's leaving, he gives whichever school he's going to the stability that recruiting needs for this upcoming year. With a $30 million roster in his hands and the ability to get after recruiting with a fresh start, I think Lane would kill it.

There is quite a lot of difference between leaving ahead of a playoff to win the National Championship and leaving ahead of the Citrus Bowl

it's a new era wholly different from when Saban left for LSU. There was no playoff. There was only the BCS title game. Saban's team wasn't playing in it. They were in the Citrus Bowl. you can't really compare the situations

He left Bama right before the natty, for FAU

Saban also regretted making the move to LSU the first week he came and had to be told to nut up.

Saban left after we lost our bowl game to Iowo on Christmas Eve
so none of what you shared is relatable

That's because Saban told him to. He accepted the FAU job weeks before the NC game. It wasn't a secret.

assistant coaches leaving is not the same. And he didn't just leave. he was fired by Saban

Saban tells the story better than I. He was trying to get his salary to match Izzo. He brought the LSU offer to Michigan St and was called early the next Am by the university president. Evidently he had done this before. But. . This time the president told him to carry his arse. MSU wasn't having it anymore. They left.
Saban admits they really wanted to stay.

A significantly better program than Ole Miss has ever been btw. MSU has won multiple Natties in their history (6 to be exact) just saying that alone separates them from Ole Miss. They've already made the playoff as well in 2015 btw. The 4 team one. And they likely would have made the playoff in 2021 as the #10 team in the country. Michigan State has already done what Ole Miss is doing for the first time. They also have wayyyy more money.
Acting like Ole Miss is somehow a much better program than MSU is ignoring all of history to this point..
