Baylor has way bigger problems than their 5-5 football team

I would welcome back Dave with open arms as our next DC.

If it’s Kiffin we can assume Golding will be the DC.

If it’s Dillingham, gotta assume Baker and guys like Aranda would be candidates.

Baker is a solid DC, but still can’t stop a mobile QB. I’d prefer Aranda.

So, just going to ignore the 3rd and Aranda?

Do you really think he’s been that bad? It’s Baylor for Gods sake and they haven’t been awful the whole time he’s been there

That 2019 D didn’t have the best year’s stats. But they got nasty late in the year into the playoffs.

No chance. Baylor defense is atrocious. No discipline in run lanes or assignments.

I don’t know if he’s over his head as the CEO or he’s just lost the mojo, but his defenses the last few years have been horrific

No but a lot of guys his in his position go back to being an analyst for a few season or two then decide where they want to be a coordinator

Apparently you haven’t seen too much of the Tigers the last 2 seasons…
Baker’s defenses can’t get off the field on 3rd downs if all 11 lives depended on it.

I’ll take Aranda any day over the current DC.

Interesting. Seemed to have done just that not 4 days ago.

And I’m not sure he did anything different, it was more Harold Perkins actually being engaged, so playing hard, playing disciplined, and actually making plays. Baker can scheme it up to put the players in position to make plays that contain a mobile QB, but at some point it’s on the players to go those positions and actually make those plays.

But it’s hard to stop mobile QBs for any DC. That’s why they’re so valuable and why every team wants to have one. I think this “he can’t stop mobile QBs” narrative is pretty fricking dumb actually, like it’s a flaw in his particular philosophy. And another example of fans not having the self awareness to understand that we watch our teams MUCH differently than we do any others, and hold them to much higher, usually unattainable, expectations.

My dad, for example, thinks LSU is the only team in history whose players miss tackles and get penalties. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard “Saban would NEVER do/allow that” and I listed 10 times off the top of my head where he or his teams had done exactly that, I’d have…well, I’d have a bunch of dollars. He doesn’t think we should ever give up a 1st down or throw an incomplete pass.

But that’s part of being a fan. It’s not a criticism of getting pissed when we frick up, or for having unrealistic expectations, it’s a criticism of not having the self awareness to understand that’s what we’re doing.

Tell me, who are all these DCs that consistently bottle up mobile QBs? If you name Saban, or Kirby, or even Chavis during his peak here, I’d suggest it had more to do with having a defense full of athletic freak 5-star All-Americans and future 1st rounders flying around all over the place more than some genius scheme or play calling.

LSU seems to always be a not very good tackling team and bad on 3rd down. There are plenty of stats to back that up

A prime example of what I was talking about. We watch our teams differently than others. I know it FEELS like that in the heat of the moment, but I’d ask you to show your work. And remember that Blake hasn’t even been here 2 full seasons and got that reputation after just 1, the one where he had taken over the what was probably the worst defense in LSU history.

And his aggressive defense is going to give up 3rd downs and the occasional big play if our guys aren’t disciplined and stay in their gaps and contain the edges. By its very nature, the right play call against the wrong one is going to hit for a lot of yards if he sends a blitzer and he doesn’t get home.

But it also leads to a bunch of TFLs that put teams in 2nd and 3rd and longs, and a bunch of hurries that lead to turnovers. It should lead to a bunch of sacks, but our edge rushing took a huge nosedive with the injury to Reliford. Pyburn is not quite athletic enough to be an every down DE, and without Reliford opposite him, we’ve seen how Payton can be neutered. Dude was crushing it at the beginning of the year. Gabe goes down, and Payton disappears. Hell, he barely even played Saturday.

The goal is to keep teams out of the end zone, not make them go 3 and out every possession. That’s unrealistic. So even if our 3rd down prevention rate looks low this season (I have no idea where we rank), who cares if we give up a couple of 3rd and longs on the opponents side of the field, if we eventually get em in 3rd and long and wind up with a sack and punt, interception, forced fumble, or turnover on downs on our end before they get in the end zone?

Maybe. But Baker's defense is slightly better than Goldings after being saddled with the worst LSU offense since the Miles days and Golding benefits from Kiffns NASCAR offense...

I would take Baker over PG.
