1. Who were the hot coaching names when we got Satan? Who did we want back then?

2. Were we excited when we got him from MSU?

3. When we got the Hat, who were the hot coaching names? Who did we want then?

4. Were we excited when we got him from OSU?

I only ask because I don’t remember.

I read a quote recently.

“The greatest predictor for what will happen in the future is to look back and understand what happened in the past.”

Seriously. I’m curious on y’all’s history and thoughts.

I am not excited until it is official, we get a good class, get transfers and look good game 1. I'm not getting fooled this time.

There was near zero buzz and most people knew next to nothing about him when he was hired. 4 of his 5 Michigan State seasons were 6 or 7 wins and he was not a known person in the south. People even had to be reminded that he was the Michigan State coach we played in the 95 Indy Bowl.

The names going around the most at the time were Dennis Erickson and Glen Mason.

I was disappointed because we’d beaten him in the Independence Bowl and I thought we were getting a bad coach

All I remember of Saban was it came out of nowhere and we were paying a lot of money for him at the time. Del Rio was who everyone thought we were getting then we got Les.

Have you ever wondered what about him was presented that caused the leadership and the TAF big wigs to say, “yeah, this is our guy?”

I seem to remember guys like George O'Leary (Ga. Tech), Gary Barnett (Colorado), Dennis Erickson (Oregon St); Glenn Mason (Minnesota) being some of the hot names. Saban was on the list, but not necessarily at the top

Most were lukewarm. They weren't thrilled LSU was paying $1M for him.

Jack Del Rio (Jaguars) seemed to be the #1 target...at least for Skip.

Not necessarily. Particularly coming off a NC just 2 years before. Miles was solid at OSU, but the shine had worn off a bit from his two big upsets of OU early in his time at OSU.

The only coach LSU fans were generally excited about was Brian Kelly based upon his resume. He's the only coach that didn't win a NC at LSU in the last 25 years

I was at tech the year the bulldogs came back from about 30 down to beat the cowboys in Shreveport. Not a bowl game but where tech would play to attract a big school home and home. Of course that was in 2000 I believe and would be a few years before the Hat arrived in BR.

But that was one of the Hat’s teams I believe.

Was OSU an improved team enough to make the Hat a viable coach candidate for LSU at the time?

Saban presented a well articulated vision of how LSU was going to become great and the upgrades in every aspect LSU needed to make to make that happen. Joe Dean did NOT want to pay Saban $1M or commit to such expenditures. It was Mark Emmert who saw the vision and told Joe to pay the man.

If not for Emmert, Dean likely balks at Dennis Erickson's asking price and hires Woody Woodenhoffer from Vanderbilt.

That was my senior year at LSU when we hired Saban. I never got to see him coach a game as a student.

Nobody really knew a ton about him but saw that he'd done a decent job at Michigan State. Also understand we didn't have social media, smartphones and all of that stuff yet so there was just way less access to CFB information like today.

Most weren't because this was basically "pre-internet" so the only hot names were who local radio hosts or newspaper journalist told us who were hot names.

There was a contest at TJ Ribs to guess on next Coach and only one person voted for Saban, Mrs Terry.

I was pretty excited only because after the collapse of the AL game in 1999 I was in Murphy's (or the Empire) watching the MSU game and my friend (RIP) was pointing out how much better MSU (ranked in top 10) was compared to LSU. I still remember him complaining about "why can't we get a coach like that!"

On top of that you had the OG Insiders, Big Ragou and Evil Twins reporting information about Saban, his attention to detail, and stories of his interview with Emmert.

Especially since tOSU had just destroyed his team in Alamo Bowl.
