Cities that aren’t southern, but think they are

Nashville – If you have to remind everyone how Southern you are every five minutes… you probably aren’t. Real Southern cities don’t need marketing departments to prove it.
Dallas–Fort Worth – The only Southern thing here is how fast the city falls apart at the possibility of snow.
Knoxville – No genuinely Southern city would proudly serve a Skyline Chili knockoff called Petros. And that downtown? It’s giving “Cincinnati cosplay,” not Southern charm.
Charlotte & Raleigh – Southern by geography only. The cultural Southernness clocked out a while ago and never came back.
Houston & Austin – These two are uncanny in the truest sense. They’ll swear they’re Southern, but your senses immediately know something’s off. Wait a little and the California DNA starts showing.

Doesn’t think it’s southern but everyone else does.

No one really thinks these two cities are truly southern. The big population boom makes that obvious.

Knoxville is a complicated one. 8th generation East Tennessee people actually have just as much in common with Ohio and Indiana hicks as they do Georgia and Alabama rednecks, as well as more in common with West Virginia and southwest Virginia hillibillies.
But Knoxville also feels southern, sort of.

I don't think either of these view themselves as "Southern"
Fort Worth thinks it's Dodge City in 1880
Dallas thinks it's New York

Petros isn’t a skyline chili knockoff, it’s a frito pie knockoff dumbass

Who cares? What does ‘southern’ mean? Trashy, littering, uneducated, fat, but nice?

Ft Worth is western and Austin is California

None of those Texas cities try to be Southern. Austin tries to stay weird, but that has fallen apart.
Houston and Dallas have a bit of everything, but I think Dallas and Fort Worth try to be more Western in their identities…hence the whole idea of Southwest culture.
Only places in Texas I can think of that feel “southern” are small towns in the east.

Cowboy hats and cowboy boots are Western, not Southern. Nashville is a joke.
I don't understand all your down votes.

What makes a city Southern? Define your parameters.

Knoxville has a Rust belt feel in some neighborhoods. East Tennessee had pro Union ties during the Civil War era. For those reasons, Knoxville never felt “southern”. Maybe a southern Apps feel once you get into Maryville and down towards Tellico.

Add Atlanta and every city in Florida except maybe Pensacola.
New Orleans isn't southern. Southern carribean maybe.

It’s more-so losing your southern roots than anything. However, Knoxville feels the most least rooted southern city in the list.
