Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday that President Donald Trump’s proposal to issue $2,000 tariff rebate checks to most Americans would require Congress’ approval.

“We will see. We need legislation for that,” Bessent said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” when asked about rebate checks, adding that “Those could go out.”

“I don’t think this ruling is going to go against us, but if it does, what’s (the Supreme Court’s) plan for refunds? Because how is this going to get to consumers? Are they just going to hand some of these importers big windfalls?” Bessent said Sunday.

“I don’t think the Supreme Court wants to wade into a mess like that,” Bessent added.

I think it's pretty obvious that no action will be taken on this until the SC ruling is rendered.

This is going to be another form of income redistribution once they determine the income levels of who qualifies.

Arguing our frick up was so big it can't be unwound no matter how illegal is is, is a choice.

I know this is not a popular opinion but a $2000 check to the “lower income” is just adding fuel to the fire and further separating the lower and upper classes. The long term solution is sound money via a gold backed dollar but I’m under no delusion that DC and our ruling class will ever allow sound money policy again. Sound money policy is deflationary and DC and our ruling class don’t get rich when their assets lose value.

Frick that, because I haven't received one of those yet and really don't like the practice even if I was eligible.

A 2,000 check to individuals 18 and older making 100k or less is near half a trillion dollars. We have only taken in around 10% of that amount in tariffs.

That wouldn’t be a distribution of tariff revenue but rather another inflation causing stimulus payment disguised as a tariff distribution

4D chess.

Propose the bill and force Congress to vote. Seeing as the Dems can not and will not support anything put forward by Trump, he now has a political hammer for the mid-terms.

Except for the fact that it can easily be seen as the correct position to not send out the checks

I'd rather stop playing silly political "own the Dems" games. This whole "stimulus" proposal is idiotic.

It's all about herding the sheep to where you want them to go. Dems are between a rock and a hard place. Propose $2K to the poor, Dems in congress shoot it down, use it against them in the election cycle. If they approve it, now you can remind the voter who gave you that $2K. It's all about elections, at the end of the day.

What hammer is that? The crap is so expensive we have to pass out money that exceeds what we’ve collected so we’re printing more money that will lead to greater inflation hammer?

Because that hammer doesn’t need to be swung. We desperately need to stop spending. We need cuts (everyone needs to feel some pain) and at the very least we have to balance the budget.

DC is killing the middle class and pushing it into the lower class with dependence upon handouts. People here are clamoring for it and I feel bad for them. But both freaking parties have done it over decades. I’m sorry, we do not need to be and should not even entertain being Santa Claus. We won’t ever beat the Dems at that game.

Yep. If Trump does this I will be disappointed.

No problem. Bring it up for a vote, and let the looneytoon democrats and their RINO Pals block the passage.

It worked for Obamacare. It's the precedent and precedent is holy and beyond review. Remember?

Not happening ever. The closest anyone will get to the tariff checks is Trump’s promise. The Dems will filibuster.

If the Dems were smart they would do the math and send people much smaller checks to show that Trump is full of shite
