The ones in the city squares with the large picture menus, outdoor seatings, and middle eastern/indian guys trying to hustle you to eat there…Why? Is the food actually good?

When I see an Indian (dot not feather) I immediately go the other direction. Biggest slums of society who’s #1 goal is to scam someone. Bartering is in their blood.

Because it’s in the city square, has a large picture menu, and outdoor seating.

I don’t do it, but I understand the draw for someone who doesn’t want to spend much time or thought on what they are going to eat.

I lived in Rome Italy and the only places in the entire city you could eat a mediocre meal were those type restaurants in the most touristic areas. Always packed too.

Like the tourists from the midwest not believing how good New Orleans cuisine is. . . at Bubba Gump Shrimp Factory.

A lot of people just aren’t that into food

Some of my friends are like this. It’s hard for me to understand but it’s not that uncommon

For starters, they speak English.

Secondly, pictures help when I don't know what Gemurshturwurgenstrossel is.

I could go on, but those are the two main reasons.

One of the best meals I've ever had in Scandinavia was in Stockholm. It was lunch time. We followed workers into the second floor of a building and found they were going to a cafeteria. We watched what people were ordering; most were ordering this orange thing, maybe a stew. We pointed at what the guy in front of us and indicated one with our appropriate finger.
They wrote down how much I owed and I paid.

It was the best meal I had had in several days and I still don't have a clue what I was eating.

I'd probably eat at these places.

If I'm going to Europe I'm going to look at different landscapes, architecture, and just generally be in a different place.

I don't care to eat new foods. I won't turn my nose up at new food, but I'm not seeking that out. I just don't care that much.

Sometimes it’s not about the food but the view.

What country are those in? I haven't seen them in Slovenia, Italy, Serbia, Croatia, Greece, the few places I have been in Germany, Macedonia, Montenegro or anywhere else.

Yeah, there are tourist places, but I have seen no Indians. A few Napalese here and there, but no Indians.

When we visited Rome, I learned enough Italian to make conversation and we were able to visit restaurants and cafes that otherwise would've been inaccessible. The ones that speak English are convenient but you can miss out on a lot by not learning the basics of the language beforehand.

Incredibly insensitive and out of touch with the times.

My wife (no pics on this website) and I enjoy eating at outdoor restaurants on crowded squares in Europe. Salad and sandwich, wine and local beer. People watch. Converse with people at nearby tables. WTF is wrong with that?

Nothing wrong with that at all. The OP just doesn’t understand that the food is only half the experience. Go eat at a hole in the wall place but you’re looking at a wall. Vacation means enjoy everything

You didn't see these type places in Italy or Greece? Did you just not go to Rome, Athens, Florence, Venice, etc and only stay in rural areas?
