PHILADELPHIA — The United States plans to strike its last penny for circulation, part of an effort to retire the coin that has been used over 200 years and now costs more to produce than it is worth.

At an event on Wednesday, Nov. 12, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach will mark the striking of the "final circulating penny," the end of production for a coin that's been used since the 1790s. The Treasurer and Secretary are set to formally stamp the last circulating penny on Wednesday afternoon around 2 p.m.

While the penny "remains legal tender and will retain its value indefinitely," according to the Treasury Department, the humble one-cent coin will no longer be minted. There are currently an estimated 300 billion pennies in circulation — "far exceeding the amount needed for commerce," Treasury said in a statement.

The dollar won’t be far behind at the rate our dysfunctional corrupt government prints money.

They're already appreciating. I saw a commercial the other day for a roll of 50 pennies for only $10.

Now I see they've doubled in price to $39.99 for two rolls:

They're extra shiny.

hopefully. Penny should've been cut loose 25 years ago. Now is right time for nickel.

I would have zero problem with rounding to nearest 10/c

It still only costs 5 cents in material to make a nickel, so I see no problem with it. It's over 3 cents a piece to make a penny, so there's no point in making them when we already have way more than enough in circulation.

Right. and vice versa.

Buy just the right amount of shite and you could bilk the grocery store out of 4cents

Penny cost: Approximately 3.7 cents to produce in fiscal year 2024.

Nickel cost: Approximately 13.8 cents to produce in fiscal year 2024.

Financial implications: While the government has been losing money on pennies for a long time, the cost of a nickel has risen significantly due to raw material prices, creating a new financial problem if pennies were eliminated and more nickels were needed.

Should only happen on cash transactions. No need to round when digital currency is involved.

I always go get this fancy bread at a local market and the price comes to $5.09 so when I pay cash I give them $5.10 and say just keep it. I will now be stopping that practice

Since Pennie’s will no longer be made, is the “idea” of a penny going away as well?

In other words, is everything in commerce going to be rounded up or down to the nearest 5 cents? Sales taxes are most often in increments of 1 cent. They are not going to cancel sales tax….is the minimum sales tax going up to 5 cents?
