My son is 12 and is a pretty experienced dirtbike rider.. lately he’s been telling us that he wants an e-bike for Christmas, but like I said in the title, I don’t know anything about them.. is anyone here familiar with them?

Unless it’s my only option, I’d rather not go with some cheap china made crap, but I don’t know anything about brands to look for or anything like that. The only thing I know for sure is that he wants one that looks like a dirtbike, not the ‘old lady with the fat fanny seat’ ones (his words, not mine )

Any advice would be appreciated; thanks in advance

There's a bike shop in Mandeville and Slidell owned by a vet.

Brooks. Look it up on Facebook.

They also rent bikes for the trailhead. I would start there. They carry, assemble and service a few different brands. Talk to Patrick? and see which ones are most reliable.

How old is your son?

I'm not sure how much you are wanting to spend. Simmons Sporting Goods in Bastrop sells one, but it is pricey.

Simmons

You might do better placing your post on the Outdoor Board.

Are you talking about one with pedals that looks basically like a MX bike or a pedal-less actual MX bike like the ones KTM makes? The KTM versions are badass but actually cost slightly more than their equivalent gas bikes. I have a nephew that has a adult sized KTM and basically the 50cc electric equivalent for his son. They are a huge MX family and use them so they can ride in their (large) backyard without disturbing the neighbors. They have a garage full of gas 2 and 4 strokes for away from home.

Everyone will think you’re a shitty parent and judge you.

That’s all that’s guaranteed for parents who buy their young kids e-bikes

I could see em being banned or having some sort of law restricting them in the near future. Idk much bout em either other than seeing Kids fly on em down sidewalks and streets with no regard for stop signs or anything.

I’ve got no advice on brands or models, but if you’re going to get him one, teach him the rules of the road too.

Kids coming into the emergency department with TBIs, broken bones, and worse from injuries sustained from e-bike and scooter accidents seem like almost a daily occurrence here.

Idk the right answer for 10-15 year olds, but 3 years ago we complained about them being antisocial on tablets and phones all day. Now they are out here breaking bones! Its like the 70s and 80s again

Alot of them can do 30 and the kids do 30 on them all the time in neighborhoods. It's stupid

At least they are quiet. I don't understand why people let their children drive those little dirt bikes and even full size 4 wheelers in a neighborhood. That's far worse than an electric bike.

Decide if you are getting him one that is more like a bike or more like a motorcycle…power.

Since he said dirt bike then I assume he wants a E mountain bike.

All the major brands make them. So check with the big bike shops.

It is really all about the battery and suspension system on E mountain bikes.

Through 5 minutes of googling and reading reviews, I wouldn't hesitate to buy this if my son was into it and wanted one.

I wasn’t around in the 70s and 80s, but I would be willing to bet that the injuries seen today as a result of zooming around the streets at 30 mph are quite a bit more frequent and extensive than the ones sustained by you and the boys dicking around the neighborhood on your schwins back in the day.

Besides, I didn’t tell the guy not to get his kid an e-bike and wrap him in bubble wrap. I just told him to teach him the rules of the road.

I’ve maybe seen 1 in 10 e-bikers following rules of the road. They just plow through stop signs like they have right of way.

Don’t buy a spare battery from China.

Look that up on your own. I can never unsee the elevator video.

Looks cool to me. I’m 55 and still ride dirt bikes so my opinion may be a little biased.

I have research them a little. Thinking about getting one to ride around the subdivision with the kids.
Surron seems to be one of the better brands.

Kids need to be on bike, but they need to pedal. No E-bikes

Imagine the things we could have jumped in the neighborhood on an E bike.
