The oldest church in Rome celebrated its 1,700th birthday today...

The Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran, built by Emperor Constantine, was dedicated on this day 1,700 years ago by Pope St. Sylvester I (r. 314-335). While the Vatican is often associated with the papacy, few people realize that St. John Lateran is the seat of the Bishop of Rome and not St. Peter's.

The Catholic Church sure is an amazing organization. Only one that has lasted since antiquity. Wonder why that is.

I Googled and looked at images of the inside the Church. It's a magnificent work of art. Not sure you'd ever see anything built to that magnitude ever again.

Go stand in one of the 1000 churches in Rome, much less St. Peter’s, and you will be awe inspired by the artistry and architecture of those churches. They make you feel small and part of something much bigger than yourself.

Been there and it’s super impressive.
For some reason the church of St Margaret of Antioch, a tiny chapel sitting on the cliff in Vernazza, built around 1300, was more impressive to me and hit me in a powerful way.
One of my favorites memories is sitting on the breakers beneath that chapel with my wife late at night, drinking a bottle of local wine in plastic cups. The fishing boats floated in the waves and I looked up at the chapel knew instinctively that life didn’t get much better

I have been there.
Beautiful and historic church.
It is the cathedral of Rome where the Pope is the bishop.
The huge front doors are from the ancient Roman Senate.
Right across the street is the staircase that Jesus is said to have climbed to face his trial before Pontious Pilate. Pilgrims climb up it on their knees.

I think there’s some confusion. St. John the Lateran is in Rome. Jesus’ trial was in Jerusalem.

No confusion.
The staircase was moved from Jerusalem to Rome.
The Romans didn’t have to steal it because they owned it. Jerusalem was part of the Roman Empire.

These are things men used to built to something much greater than ourselves.
We can build marvelous things today, but think of what we could build if we had THIS mindset and level of devotion to/for a higher purpose.
