Interesting tid bit that came up in another thread.

Over the last 25 years, only 4 coaches in their first gig as a HC have won a natty. Those being Fisher, Dabo, Kirby, and Day. That's it.

Give me someone with some success running a program at a lesser conference over a coordinator any day. LSU is too big of a stage to learn on the job. Even O had experience as a HC prior to landing the full time gig.

Considering your list includes every single active coach national championship I'm not sure your point is that strong.

This point is not going to go how you want it to.

So in other words of all the coaches who have won a NC over the last 25 years 40% were in their first gig as a HC. Or 33% of NCs over the last 25 years have been won by a HC in their first gig.

You are leaving out Stoops and Coker. You also fail to mention that only 15 coaches have won a NC over the last 25 years.

Over the last 10 seasons, 6 coaches have won national championships. 3 of those are in your list (Dabo, Smart & Day).

Over the last 15 seasons, 9 coaches have won national championships. 4 of those are your list.

That’s pretty good representation by first time head coaches in winning recent national championships.

That probably has more to do with what schools typically hire first time HCs than first time HCs.

What a dumb take.

If anything those guys have proven beyond any doubt that you DO NOT NEED previous head coaching experience to be successful.

I’d rather a first time head coach who is smart, aggressive, and has something to prove rather than a tired burned out retread who costs way more money then he’s worth (BK and Bilicheck come to mind immediately)

You've also got Marcus Freeman as a first time HC taking his team to a NCG, Kalani Sitake having BYU at 8-0 as a first time HC, and guys like Brent Key, Joey McGuire and Clark Lea as first time HCs resurrecting their programs from the dead. This is a different era of CFB, you need hungry guys who can recruit their asses off and correctly spend their NIL money more than someone with 100 years of HC experience.
