What happened to fun kid movies that were made to teach life lessons?

I've enjoyed showing my son movies like Little Giants, The Goonies, and The Sandlot over the years. They're classics. They don't do a whole lot besides entertain and tell a story. The story always has a moral or a theme that kids can relate to. And they're live action as opposed to animated.

The only kid movies that come out nowadays are animated. I can't even find a good live action kid movie made in the last ten years that wasn't part of an epic trilogy.

I can't imagine they're super expensive to make.

Where the hell did these movies go?

For the most part they exchanged life lessons and morals for indoctrination and propaganda though there may be some occasional exceptions

Didn’t realize that it’s been that long. There’s a ton of books so I don’t know why they stopped making movies out of them.

Perhaps.

But it seems more like Hollywood just wants to maximize profits and goes for blockbusters with every single movie they release.

We need an "A24" to get back to family-friendly movies. Even non-kid movies that are just meant to entertain.

Do rom coms still exist? I can't remember the last time a dumb chick flick came out

They became moves to teach cultural indoctrination instead.

Wife and I were talking about this recently as we have young kids. They are currently all about K Pop Demon Hunters, which has a great message; but as you pointed out where are the live action movies.

The "most recent" ones the kids were watching over the summer were those terrible supper buddies movies (acting & script made them hard to watch, but the kids love them); and those are 10+ years old

The live action aspect is crucial for kids to see the stories as applicable to their real lives.

I think there are good lessons in an animated film, but there's more distance when they're not real people.

There were so many good kids movies in the 80s and 90s. Some in the early 2000s. Then they just disappeared.

How else will your 7-year old know if they like having sex with boys or girls?

Hollywood is doing the important work.

This is the absolute truth.

How many movies or TV shows get made depicting loving families, like a husband and wife who are raising kids in a good, healthy environment?

Feels like that sort of depiction used to be fairly common in the past, then it gradually became uncommon, and now is basically non-existent.

It could very well be a by-product of the fact a lot of people in end up in Hollywood often come from emotionally damaging backgrounds and maybe shite families are all they know.

Think it has more to do with cost than anything else. Movies are now “events” rather than a weekly outing due to it being close to $100 to take a family of 4 to a movie over the weekend.

It pushed out the low to mid budget family movies and focus is on big budget kid movies since families are really only going to choose a couple a year to go to. Easier for families to wait for streaming than to spend that discretionary income on a movie. It’s a shame but just the world we live in.

Angel Studios fills in this gap with plenty of movies that have a great message. Obviously don't expect Citizen Kane or anything, but they're entertaining.

I think the most surprising thing as an adult going back and watching content made for kids-teenagers is how often that immoral things are made to seem ok. Like the messaging being "lying is fine, everyone does it".

Home Team is the only movie like these I can think of that we watch with our kids that has come out somewhat recently. Besides that, we're watching the 3 you mentioned plus Rookie of the Year, Angels in the Outfield, Little Big League and the Big Green on repeat.

Anime is really popular today and tends to promote traditional values like hard work and protecting others. I think more kids today can relate to Tanjiro from Demon Slayer, who spent nearly the entire first season training to get good, than they can to someone like Rey from Star Wars who was automatically the best at everything she did and needed no training or practice.
