Clooney tells young actors to get off of social media

He'll probably get labeled as "old man yells at clouds" by some, but I do think this is solid advice.

During the latest episode of The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, the Oscar-winning actor claimed casting directors and studio executives have asked him to select artists for his film projects based on their online following.
"When I was directing and I was casting, and it was between two actors, the casting director and the studio would come to me and go, 'Well, she's got 175,000 followers on Instagram, and the other girl's got 30,000.' Those were literally the discussions we had," he stated. "And I said to all these actors, 'Get the frick off of it. Get off of all of it. Because if you're not on it, you have nothing to be compared to.'"

Clooney went on to note that he understands why actors are tempted to "monetise" social media to pursue other projects.
However, the Ocean's Eleven star argued that having a platform on sites like Instagram and Facebook won't benefit people's acting careers in the long run.
"But trying to maintain a career and answer all of the questions that every individual has for you, it's diminishing your ability to be bigger than life. It's inevitable, and I'm sort of swimming upstream, and I don't think that there's much you can do about it, but I do think it's better to not be as available," the 64-year-old continued.

"We're the ones who talked about AIDS when it was just being whispered, And we talked about civil rights when it wasn't really popular.

George thinks they would better utilize their time by supporting soft coups of political candidates and installing nominees who haven't received a single vote of the party's electorate. That's what young actors should be invested in.

Solid take... but screw him anyway.

I wish he was right, but it seems like this is very bad advice. If they are basing the hiring on your social media, then for an up and coming actor, you would be killing your career by not participating.

People, especially young men, would be better off spending less time online and avoiding most social media
I recommend reading or listening to Scott Galloway. He’s a sharp guy with a strong analytical mind and sharp critical thinking skills…

Wrong. 300,000 vs 0 is the comparison
It’s important to the new gen

But does the new gen pay to go see movies in theaters because they follow someone on IG or TikTok? Honest question because I absolutely don't know. It seems like a lot of the young, Gen Z social media superstars aren't really blowing up the box office either.

300,000 vs 30,000 is much worse than 300K vs 0.
One shows you failing in a marketplace, the other shows that you're focused on other aspects of your career.
Going with the "hot brand" isn't anything new. Putting Leif Garrett in a 70s movie might put young viewers in the seats in the short run, but it hurts the longevity of the film.

Nope. He supported having a primary.

This advice only helps actors trying to get a role in a movie directed by George Clooney.

Clooney needs to go hide for a while.

I literally had this thought the other day.
Celebs use to be this mysterious thing. Now they do youtube videos telling what their favorite brand of candle is.

And old maid Jennifer Lawrence said she's regretting interjecting politics into her social comments as well.

Ben Affleck spoke about this on Theo Vonn’s podcast a while back. Said he didn’t want to be seen constantly. He said people have a harder time getting invested in his characters if he is doing tik tok dances or commercials all the time.
Most actors these days seem to be the opposite. Want to be seen everywhere by everyone all the time. Would be better for them and their movies if they were only seen in their movies.

Will never happen. They crave attention.
