Just after Brian Kelly was named to the LSU job, a Notre Dame fan noticed my LSU cap and thanked LSU for taking Kelly off his hands. I asked him why he felt that way since Kelly had been quite successful the three previous seasons in South Bend. He said Kelly was arrogant and nobody liked him.

I recall Kelly bragged that by coming to LSU, he'd never had to get on a plane again to recruit. On his first day in Baton Rouge his schedule was to have some family photos taken while Nick Saban (the morning after winning the SEC title game) was in Shreveport for an in-hme visit with Kendrick Law. (Bama signed him). I've also read an episodes of assistant coaches handing a phone to Kelly asking him talk to an important prospect and having Kelly refuse, saying, "tell him to make an appointment." In fact, I don't recall a time in four years when I've read that Kelly was on a trip for an in-house visit with a key player. (I'm sure he must have).

But the most serious of his many mistakes may be his treatment of strength coach Tommy Moffitt. Moffitt helped make John Curtis High School a national powerhouse, joined an 8-4 University of Tennessee team that went 45-5 over the next four teams and won a national title, joined a 9-4 Miami team that went 22-2 the following two years and, of course, contributed to the LSU team that went to the national championship game four times and won three.

Now at Texas A&M, he helped take a team that was 8-5 in 2024 to 8-0 now. It must have been sweet revenge for Moffitt to watch his Aggies humiliate Kelly and lead to his firing.

Moffitt was the first LSU staffer fired by Kelly when he arrived and he was replace by three "Player Development" coaches. Several former LSU players said the LSU team is now "soft" and Matt Flynn, who led LSU to a national title, said Tommy Moffitt was the most respected member of the athletic department in the view of the players. After two decades with LSU, I don't know if Moffitt would consider returning after what Kelly did to him, but I hope whoever comes in as the next head coach will make every effort to get him back.

You don’t have to be well-liked to be a good coach. Unfortunately, his coaching misgivings didn’t give him any room to spare on the being an a-hole part.

I’ll agree on Moffitt. Dumb decision. Although to be fair, what did Kelly even know about Moffitt enough to keep him on? Probably not all his fault there.

It’s crazy how people are now pretending or ignoring the many pictures of in home visits by Kelly throwing up the “L”.

While I agree with most of your statement.

1. Why did he not stay at Tennessee
2 Why did he not stay at Miami
3. Why would he leave ATM.

I get what your saying. But we got a new Coach and he wanted to do things his way.

This place sure does love to revise history. Everyone wanted Moffitt gone, and everyone thought his training methods were outdated.

That’s how I remembered it on here

I’ve been in that weight room many times in 2000-2004, he was awesome, intense, and inspiring.

Seriously, 2020 and 2021 we were soft as shite and we had a bunch of soft tissue injuries, which is due in part to lackluster strength and conditioning.

I don’t have an issue with him moving on from Moffitt. At that time most thought cleaning house completely was needed.

There is a difference in moving on from someone and being an arse in how you do it.

That was the issue. Was handled incredibly badly.

Maybe a little research would have revealed all he needed to know. But, he obviously didn't care.

Nobody liked him! You know why? 'Cause the guy's a stiff, pal. A total zero. No charisma! He walks into a room, the wallpaper starts to peel. He's got the stage presence of a... a damp rag.
You put me on that sideline? You'd have championships. You'd have sold-out shows at halftime. But instead, you get this... this accountant!
Of course they canned him! He's probably out in the parking lot right now, trying to sell his little windbreaker. Tell him to get lost. He's boring me. This conversation is over.

The mistake that accounts for the lack of running success by weakening the OL. With the running game weakened much easier to defend Nuss and the passing attack.

Moffitt was the strength Coach at Texas A&M last year too. So them going 8-5 was in part due to his Coaching as well. He took over a team that went 7-6 and was not a physical football team. He and Elko solved that problem last season as they were very physical in the trenches but they had QB issues that held them back. Their young QB has improved and that is the difference between this years team and last years team. Reed's progression.

However, two things can be true. Moffitt was burnt out and needed some time off before taking over as LSUs S&C Coach again while also being true that Moffitt was the best hire Elko made at A&M. Revisionist history is what everyone is doing right now. Yes O meddled with certain aspects of player development and took away the accountability for certain players but Moffitt was also burnt out and his message and program wasn't having the same impact. I said when he was let go that I hope it would only be temporary but Kelly and Woodward were not required to keep him.

The only thing about the situation that is messed up is that Woodward guaranteed him his job which he shouldn't have done. Kelly dismissing him was not the issue it was Woodward meddling in affairs that he shouldn't.
