Saban discusses job openings, current state of college football on McAfee today

“I think one of the things that is really important now in college football, and let me make a comparison for you, in the NFL, everything’s vertically integrated in one building. In other words, the rules are clearly defined by the league as to what you can and can’t do. Whether it’s salary cap, contracts, whatever it is. You either succeed or fail based on what happens in the building. From the owner to the GM, to the coaches, to the personnel folks, to the player. College is just kind of the opposite. Everything’s happening externally, not internally, like it is in the NFL,” Saban explained.
“So you’ve got all these external factors that are constantly changing. Whether it’s the transfer portal, how much you can pay guys, revenue sharing, what kind of collective do you have. So, traditionally, how have you been able to adapt to that? And my point about tradition is, some of the traditional jobs, like LSU, that people always looked at as one of the best jobs, have they adapted to all these things like they need to to be able to continue to be one of the best jobs in the country?
“I think that’s why you see Vandy, Indiana — places who have not historically been traditionally great jobs, actually having a lot of success now, because they have managed the external factors very well to bring it in house so that they can function effectively. So what’s to say LSU, Florida — they’re traditionally the best jobs, but are they the best jobs now, relatively speaking, based on how they’ve adapted to the external circumstances that really affect your ability to be successful in college football.”

Saban believes the advent of NIL and the transfer portal has led to regional recruiting being less impactful, and that could be having an impact on LSU’s descent from top-tier status.
“I can’t give you any statistical facts on this, but is regional recruiting as effective as it once was?” Saban added. “You know, I’ve also made the statement that kids in Louisiana grew up wanting to go to LSU. Kids in Alabama grew up wanting to go to Alabama. Well, some of those kids are going to Ohio State because they’re getting paid more. And it becomes a little bit more about money than it does about regional alliances.
“And you can’t blame the kids for it. I’m not. Don’t want you to think that. But so at the same time, I’m saying, if you don’t have those resources — you know, it used to be about program facilities. How can you develop players? How can you create value for their future? Well, how can you create value for them right now? It’s what’s changed in college football, and how have you adapted to them.”

This is why Saban is not getting back into coaching

He has absolutely no desire to coach college football.

It’s a fair discussion, though LSU seems to still be doing pretty well with in state recruiting, and that’s with a disengaged head coach

What about kids in Louisiana that decided to go to Alabama? Surely that wasn’t due to any financial motives along the way…

Saban was used to getting the number 1 player in every state in America every year and when he couldn’t do that anymore more after NIL, he quit.

It’s a simple bidding war, and I was told just this morning that our pockets are so deep that money is no object.
Buy Saban.
Buy him players.
Watch him cook.
He could win it all next season, I shite you not.

Nailed it. He enjoyed coaching with a stacked deck vs every other school.

That did not happen as often as folks here make it out to be. But Bama did have the bagman network down to an art.

I don't know why he would question LSU In those aspects since we were like one of the top spenders or the top spender last year. Kind of sounds like he wants to coach for LSU if you ask me. He knows the money's there and he knows the job is his if he wants it. Question is does he really want to coach again?

Long gone are the days when player acquisition comes down to the size of your stadium and having Brazilian wood floors in the weightroom. You need need coaches who have systems in place that can withstand fairly significant annual player turnover and management teams that don't waste money on guys who won't fit into those unbending styles. Once you add money into the equation, you jack up the intelligence that's needed to run the show. It all kind of reminds me of big-time European soccer.

How many of you would want to put up with this bullshite at the age of 74? Saban's age simply will not allow him to coach again in this day and age. If Saban were, let's say, 55 years old...... Absolutely, he would do it. FTR, he was still pulling in top classes in his 70's.

I wish Pat would have just flat out asked if he would take the LSU job. I bet Pat was told before the interview he wasn’t allowed to ask it. That’s the only thing that makes sense.

Bama is no longer the only program that can openly pay players and get away with it. He won't college again lolololol

Saban is right on this, believe it or not LSU is headed back to the 90’s LSU. We need to put all our resources in Louisiana high school recruiting and about 5-8 transfer portal targets. Pay the high schoolers big money in state. Jakeem Steward should have gotten that money but if we continue with situations like Jakeem or Derick Williams we will continue to miss the playoffs for sure.

Which can change if Miss Terry hears a number she likes.

We had a coach that wouldn’t even talk to recruits and for the most part still locked down the state so I would disagree there.
