The question was raised earlier and I believe deserves an answer, and by how much?

Kiffin was my realistic choice at the time.

I did have Freeze in there if I want to be fully honest.

Was relieved it wasn't Mel Tucker.

The answer is on paper it was kelly. The mistake was the 10 year guaranteed contract that should have never happened. You didn't need him that bad. Kiffen had a lot of issues going on at the time which may have precluded him from getting the job at the time.

Not really - not then. He had not shown he had matured and grown at that point.
Most of the hot board names actually were failures.

Stop using hindsight. The top candidates were:

Lincoln Riley
Mel Tucker
Lane Kiffin
Jimbo Fischer
Billy Napier

Yep. I would have been cool with Kelly on a 5 yr contract. No coach is ever a sure thing.

And he never would have stepped on campus for that

So the alternate reality is we get Napier. Not being in the playoffs and "elite" has sucked for the last 4 years, but its damn sure better than being a UF fan has

These were all lazy, media hires.

If Woodward had done a real search, one where finding the “best” coach and not the most popular hire, there were lots of candidates.

And….yes, Lanning would have been included in that pool along with numerous other elite OC’s, DC’s and head coaches at other programs.

That's easy to say now but four years ago it wasn't so easy.

Dan Lanning - he should have at least been interviewed

Scott had too much power in that search
