I know I know, it's done and over with, thankfully.....but I'm puzzled at how his selections for his first DC and his 2nd OC were just so bad.

He has always had good coordinators in ND. How could he fall flat on his face with Matt House. Yes we had a depleted team but it was absolutely terrible.
Then to promote Sloan to OC after Denbrock left was a bad selection. Was that because of Underwood?

If his first DC was bad, but his second one was good…

And his first OC was good, but his second was bad…

Isn’t he still batting .500?

When your life is in a downward spiral you tend to make poor decisions. Not saying his life was, but it seems like it was not going great from the reports mentioned.

I am pretty sure House came highly recommended to BK...and Sloan was a convenient hire because the team had just put up amazing numbers offensively, and BK probably felt pressure to promote from within to keep staff continuity...plus Sloan's relationship with Underwood was a factor.

I think offensively line woes and a not-so-mobile QB doomed this offense. It looked unrecognizable from last year's offense, which was also led by Sloan.

People here will deny it but the majority of this board (myself included) believed Sloan was the secret sauce to Jayden's meteoric rise and was totally fine promoting Sloan after Denbrock left.

We were wrong.

JD benefited from a good OC, 2 NFL caliber receivers, and his ability to stop being hesitant and to let the ball go.

Sloan made out like a bandit in all this.

As far as House, I'm sure he knows his Xs and Os but he 100% could not get through to these kids in any way, shape or form. Plus he seemed like a guy you don't particularly play hard for - and so when things start going south you really lose a lot of effort.

There's nothing puzzling about anything at all. Kelly, and his Agent, screwed over Woodward, the BoS, and the at-time President, then proceeded to insult the fanbase. Kelly figured we were a bunch of uneducated rubes, that were spoiled rotten by 2019, something he never had any plans of duplicating. Kelly found a golden parachute, while telling everyone to f'k off at the same time

If I remember correctly BK wanted Brad White and when he decided to stay at UK he recommended House. Several former Tigers thought that was a good hire.

I think he also wanted Tommy Rees as his OC

Goes to show what a crapshoot coaching is.

House was thought of as "good", and he was solid his first season. Losing his DL coach just before season 2 started was his downfall- they didn't have a replacement (ended up getting Pete Jenkins out of retirement just to get by). The prior division of duties got screwed up, and House (who had done the linebackers) didn't spend the time with them that he needed to. So the linebackers went to shite too. Add in the fact that the secondary was total crap until we got Corey Raymond back recruiting (we were portal castaways the first few seasons), it was a disaster.

As for Sloan... I think he was too green, but this season hasn't been kind to him either. You expected Nussmeier to pick up where he left off, but he's been hurt all season. Can't drive the ball downfield. Green was supposed to be the go-to cheat code at TE, he's been out half the season. Aaron Anderson is too small to be the primary target, none of the portal guys have made an impact. What they planned on the offense being, hasn't been able to get moving.

I wonder how much the run at a Heisman influenced Nuss to “try” to play with injuries, and blocked Kelly from using Van Buren.

The victory against Clemson was a false gauge of where we were as a team. Kinda, don’t mess with success type attitude took hold.

Kelly had ZERO to do with the hiring of Blake Baker, Corey Raymond or Frank Wilson. He did hire Matt House and his supposed good friend Denbrock couldn’t get away fast enough. Kelly was a dumb choice from the start. Hire Lane and they can save money by asking him to keep Baker as DC and Frank at RB for recruiting along with a couple other holdovers. OC in a Kiffin offense is basically the coffee boy but he needs a smart defensive mind that knows the recruiting ground and Pete Golding sucks.

Heisman, and probably more importantly, wanting to push himself into the 1st round. That wouldn't happen if he didn't play.

That's the thing with Nussmeier's injury; I think the offense is actually better suited to Van Buren's skills. If Van Buren were to have played and done well, you're not benching him later in the year when Nuss comes back. At that point, you're playing for the present AND the future.

Nuss knew that, it's why he pushed to start with the injury. He was probably ok in practice, but couldn't handle any contact at all.

This all sucked for us. We had 3 options on offense:
1) a 1st rd QB pushing for the Heisman, putting up big numbers
2) a young, fairly mobile QB who would have thrived in the "Jayden Daniels Lite" offense that you know is in Sloan's playbook
3) a crippled senior QB refusing to sit because he would lose his spot, and screws everything up.

We got #3

Sloan and House, while at LSU, were clueless. BK two most important functions and he blew it both counts. Fraud

J.Daniels benefited for ability to run and a terrible D, so he had to be on the field late in games.

From the legit sounds of it, the day he signed that contract he honestly just quit working hard. From his first week to his last, there are just so many reports from current, past players and coaches coming out, it was just minimum effort and work ethic. He just didn't try.
