Mandel: LSU was the coaching carousel’s best job. Then Gov. Jeff Landry grabbed the mic

LINK: NY Times article
quote:
LSU has long been viewed as one of the best jobs in college football. Rabid fan base. A state full of blue-chip prospects who grew up wanting to play for the Tigers. Three national championships this century. Pretty much a coach’s dream.
And lo and behold, the LSU coaching job is currently vacant after the school fired Brian Kelly on Sunday. Forget Penn State, forget Florida, forget any other school that might realistically open. This is surely going to be the most coveted job of the cycle, right?
Well, it would have been. But with one unhinged press conference moment on Wednesday, Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry may have scared off all of the top candidates.
In the annals of crazy SEC coach hiring stories (Mike Price’s infamous night out, Bobby Petrino’s secret plane ride, Gene Chizik getting booed at the airport), this one earns a top-four seed for absurdity. Standing behind a lectern at the state capitol with a sign that said “Protecting the Most Vulnerable” — the news conference was supposed to be about food stamp payments — the governor of Louisiana was asked a question about LSU’s coaching search.
quote:
LSU’s leadership is so badly misaligned that the Landry news conference clip was probably ricocheting around group chats in every football building in America on Wednesday. Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin is presumed to be a top target for both Florida and LSU.
Can you imagine his thought bubble while watching that clip on Twitter? (Because he’s always on Twitter). So you’re telling me they don’t have a president, and the AD is not going to be the AD much longer. So, my boss would be … the governor?
Not that his agent Jimmy Sexton won’t still use that school as leverage when negotiating the ginormous extension Kiffin is going to get from Ole Miss.

What is he talking about? The coaching search hasn't or is just beginning to start. And when they do they will get the coach they are looking for.

the media clip of him saying what he said about our AD and the hire, has over 2 million views on twitter. Yall think it’s not a big deal though?
I was so proud of us firing BK, but after this, I wish we hadn’t. We are going to downgrade big time.

It has 2 million views because he calls out agents and money in CFB.
Exactly what Landry wanted. I wish he didn’t. But freaking about anything in October before we have a president is just melting to melt

Can’t speak for the other 1,999,999 but I watched it to see just how much of shitshow he made it. And I wasn’t disappointed.

That is a woke political shot at Landry
Thinking a governor inserting himself in a football search is detrimental seems pretty non partisan to me.

You can’t make this shite up. So now it’s woke, to not think it’s a good look for the governor to lie about information being shared (Jimbo’s buy out, who is paying for BK buy out, AD, BK, Jimbo same agent - all lies) and then to not like the Governor saying the AD isn’t going to make the call and that it would be the BOS or Trump? So not liking that is woke?
Please refer to me as Mr Woke moving forward.

Agree. Landry is a clown, and no coach wants that moron even close to breathing down his neck.

3x MAGA voter… Landry is a clown and was not honest about Jimbo buyout. He’s also just looking for national attention once again. But he’s too dumb to realize all he got was negative attention

LSU is supposed to have a new president next week.
That means Woodward’s fate will be decided and the president and BOS can get on with his replacement (if necessary) and a new HC. Nothing has to be rushed at this time regarding HC.
Yes, Landry has authority to insert himself, but there should be no need if we get a president next week.
What I do wish, however, is that he would shut the ever loving frick up and worry about the very real issues this state faces.

Lol same. I was hoping for a clown show and this has surpassed my wildest dreams.
No president. No AD except there is one he is just a bigger idiot than the governor and has no power. Let’s raise ticket prices. BK suing for his full contract. Not to mention the embarrassment of your rival coming in and taking over your home.
What an amazing week! A week that could ruin years of LSU football
He can say he’s not in charge, but essentially the governor is the only person in charge. And he just decided NOW was the time to go to war with agents and coaches over contracts. Lol Christmas came early this year.
