Why would a top coach consider the Gov's incentive-based contract?

If you're Kiffin, Key, or any other top-tier candidate with a traditional contract and guaranteed buyout, why would you take the risk of being the first to try out the new incentive-based model?

A lot can go wrong, obviously. I don't see any of those guys taking that chance.

Could be good for a young guy. But you'd better bet on the right guy.

The governor has no say.

Nobody with a brain is listening to what he is saying and thinking he has any authority.

He is embarrassing himself and, by default, the state.

But the LSU job is the LSU job and at the end of the day, big time coaches understand this clown has no say.

I can’t understand why people aren’t understanding that he has no authority on the matter.

It’s possible, I suppose. You also have to consider that most of these coaches have huge egos, which comes with an extremely high level of confidence. If they’re confident they’re going to get the NiL support they want/need, they may take the bait. But the inawnricea will likely need to be on the high end for winning. There still has to be a shiny bait on the hook somewhere.

The only upside would be the incentives could get you to a huge number that otherwise would not happen. You’d have to structure it that way.

We should give Landry an incentive based contract and see how he likes it.

That's an assumption. A rational person who doesn't know jack about this gov or his level of authority will take him at his word to some degree.

100%.

He's the most powerful elected official in the state and seems intent on inserting himself into this situation. Who knows how much influence he's going to have. Why even consider dealing with that if you have other, more stable options?

As Matt Canada said.

“Because it’s LSU”

This program is that program. Are you going anywhere? Idk any fan that’s going anywhere. I do know a bunch of fans that hold the standard. And I know the donors and BoS have that same standard. That’s not changing.

We don’t do much good other than cooking and football. But we always do those good and everyone knows as much.

Right. The boosters pay who they want to pay, and they're not going to cough up the money to fire Kelly just to settle for Delaware's offensive coordinator.

They have the most pull in this, and they'll pay big if they want to

Anything is possible but you're kidding yourself if you think the dynamic is going to change overnight. Coaching searches are ALWAYS a sellers market. Way more good jobs available than coaches in high demand. The buyers are desperate to make that splash hire and they are backed by businessmen that have egos just as large as the coaches who are willing to pay to get THEIR guy!

Whichever school out of LSU, Penn State, and UF hires first will set the market for this hiring cycle. The duration of contract may get smaller but the premium will continue to go up. The guaranteed money will likely remain relatively the same.

Don't forget that a handful of agents represent an overwhelming majority of the coaches which means the agents will dictate the market unless there becomes collusion among the ADs. Even then that collusion will only work until a desperate AD breaks ranks.

You mean why would the key donors who are footing the bill for the next football coach consider the idiot governer's idea on something he has no say in?
