Incentive based contracts without huge buyouts

Really think this is the direction eventually it will all go towards. However, it hasn't gotten to that point yet. Do we dare be the first major program to emphasize and go this route? If we do then my thoughts are you can rule out most if not all of the big name coaches. why would they take it when they are being guaranteed big dollars at other schools. Think only a young up and comer that would be greatly increasing the guaranteed portion of their pay along with having opportunity for much more would go for that type of deal right now.

You can start it, but free market says it won’t stay. The minute another school comes calling everything changes. I understand what he is saying, but the market is what the highest bidder will offer both in years and monetary guarantees.

LSU can create a blueprint for this and others will follow.

maybe they will follow.
or maybe they will say "we can hire that guy over LSU by tossing together this guaranteed money deal"

Ken Burns on SEC network had a ideal blueprint for the contracts moving forward. Large upfront bonus then base yearly salary and incentives for each win, conf championship, playoff birth, National Championship etc

If I was said coach and someone was offering me an incentive based deal vs a guranteed deal. Why on earth would Insign an incentive based deal. If you want to go all the way down to tier 3 to find a coach sure this is the way

Arkansas tried it, and Kiffin and Leach took other SEC jobs they ended up with Sam Pittman.

That is fine, LSU, FSU, USC, PSU, Fla .....all followed the guaranteed model and failed. To me a coach who wants guaranteed money is an alarm bell.

Then you will have to target up and coming coaches. No one making at least 7 mill with a sizeable buyout is going to go for this.
You can dream all you want about Kiffin, if you are not pinyin up at least as much as Kelly got per year on the contract he's staying put.

Arkansas couldn't attract Kiffin and Leach for reasons other than incentive laden contracts like a lack of monetary investment in the football program overall.

F Kiffin! Kiffin isn't the only good coach out here. I see why Woodward has been able to bullshite his way to a lucrative career. It's b/c most of you are dumb! Cignetti isn't the only coach from the group of five who can coach successfully at this level.
Furthermore, Elko, Freeze, and Brohm all have incentive laden contracts.

You think Miss State spends more on football than Arkansas?

quote:Correct. One of your players may tear an ACL on first play, another may harbor a fugitive in his dorm room. There are too many factors that influence success. I am not sure incentives wont play a part, but I think the length of the contract is the biggest thing to correct at this time. No one should be guaranteed for 10 years. Again, too many things can happen.

Maybe there's a reason why Peter Burns is a TV Personality and Woodward is an AD.

I think MSU spends smarter than Arky. Lebby always had more upside than Pittman.

He did?
As far as Peter Burns goes, there's a reason he's never been an AD at a P5 school.
Or a Group of 5 school.
Or a high school.
Or a neighborhood block captain.
