This is why you don’t allow players to make these types of decisions

Seems a lot of former players are beating the Sheppard drum. T-bob, Brandon Harris and Michael brockers all are advocating for kelvin Shepard. Kelvin is young, seems like bright innovative defensive mind and from all accounts is a leader but damn the no coaching experience is a big big risk. I think he’s guy tho you interview

Players wanted O. I guess that worked out in one way.

He’s been a coordinator for less than a year. He doesn’t even get an interview.

Correct. ranter couch potatoes know much more than guys that actually played the game.

Brent Key for sure.
Schumann, can interview.
The other 2, nope. Matt Patricia would be horrific.

LSU is sitting on a can’t-miss hire, and going with Shepards 4 years coaching, 1 as a coordinator is basically fast tracking themselves to Auburn/Florida-level chaos. This is peak Miami-style nepotism…former players pushing a teammate or former player over experience and proven track record. High risk, huge potential disaster.

It’s quite apparent Brenden missed way too many English classes.

I know that hiring a guy who has been a coordinator for less than a calendar year as your head coach at his first head coaching stop in one of the most high pressure jobs in the country is incredibly stupid.
I’m not even asking for a guy necessarily to have head coaching experience. But hiring someone who hasn’t even been a coordinator for a full calendar year is wildly reckless. Hell he’s never even coached at the college level in any capacity nor has he recruited.

Do the opposite of whatever he suggests.

You make valid points for sure but Here’s also the reality tho: theirs no such thing as a guaranteed success when searching for coaches. Kelly was suppose to be a sure thing and he underachieved massively. We’ve seen big time programs make a best on coordinators with no proven head coach experience and it paid off big time (Georgia, Oregon , Ohio state with Ryan day ). Not saying Sheppard would be my first big but 2 things you can almost guerentee with him :
He 100 percent will understand what it means to put on that purple and gold jersey
He will bring a strong defensive culture . Surrounding him with a strong staff absolutely would be importsnt tho if they go that route

I heard he is related to Hawaii’s old mascot (Willie the Warrior).
Pretty cool!

Georgia: Kirby Smart spent roughly 20 years in coaching, with 8 years a defensive coordinator at Alabama immediately before becoming a head coach.
Oregon: Lanning spent 12 years coaching in various assistant/position and recruiting roles and 3 years as high level DC
Ohio state: Ryan Day had around 15 years of coaching experience in coordinator and position-coach roles before becoming HC
All were proven recruiters as well.

Hiring a guy with 4 years total coaching experience (mostly as a position coach and an assistant) to be a college head coach would be insanely risky.
