NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - As the federal government shutdown continues, concerns are growing over potential furloughs among state workers whose positions are funded by federal dollars.
Gov. Jeff Landry said Tuesday that some positions funded by federal dollars could be furloughed because of the federal government shutdown.
“Our focus is on protecting critical programs for the elderly, children, and individuals with disabilities, so they continue without interruption,” Landry said in a statement.

Feds should not be funding any state positions. Cut federal taxes and let states fund themselves.

I think this is mainly related to LDH/SNAP funding. But also at risk is any department that is primarily funded through federal grants.
I wonder how much the state and local law enforcement agencies rely on federal grants.

I know there's a good bit. I work in a federally funded grant position at LDH, and I used to work for another separate agency that was also federally grant funded.
Edit: Apologies, you asked for state and local law enforcement. That I don't know.

I'm begining to suspect our tax dollars pay for fricking everything.

Depending on if the dept reports its statistics to the FBI. Applying for federal grants is big deal as well to get those dollars and possibly surplus gov equip.
Alot of extra programs like holiday enforcements are federal dollars which generate OT covered by the feds.

Use this to not pay Kelly

Does this mean I can quit mailing the state my ex-wife's new car payment on the first of the month?

A lot; so do the Departments of Wildlife and Fisheries and Transportation and Development.

It's my understanding that most of the agencies should be good through the end of the year. But we'll have to wait and see. I could see Landry preemptively separating/furloughing probational employees.

Most of the State hunting and fishing programs are partially funded by the Feds collection of taxes on guns, ammo, boats, fishing eqmt...
These collected funds can ONLY be used for wildlife conservation (hunting) and fishing related activities per the Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson acts passed way back when.
Allocated as follows:
State and territorial fish and wildlife agencies are allocated funding annually, the amounts apportioned per statutory formulas as follows: Wildlife Restoration funds are formulated on the geographic size of the state or territory (50 percent of square miles and inland waters) and their number of hunting licenses sold compared to the total nationally.
Sport Fish Restoration funds are formulated on 40 percent of the state’s size in square miles and 60 percent on the number of fishing licenses sold. No state or territory receives more than five percent, nor less that one to one-half of one percent of the total funds available nationally.
State and territory fish and wildlife agencies apply to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for grants for eligible activities under the Wildlife Restoration Act (Pittman-Robertson) and the Sport Fish Restoration Act (Dingell-Johnson) and associated regulations governing use of the funds. Historic apportionment data are available in the dashboard by year, by state or territory, and by nominal or inflation-adjusted dollars.
Administrative activities are partially covered (split w/state) and projects like wetland mgmt, shooting ranges, boat docks are as well. Plenty of university research nerds get the same type of grants as sub-recipients to provide their students with opportunities to track various animals, bugs, invasive plants...who then have to submit the data to the feds/public.
Fed $$ is in just about everything you do as an American.

Generally it's for states administering federal programs. I know you'll say "neither" but would you rather have locals or Washington running programs like CHIP or School Lunch and Breakfast Programs?

Everybody - public and private - is in some way on the Federal dole.

Plenty of state jobs are funded by the feds. Each state has state employees that make disability determinations for folks filing for Social Security Disability. The employees are 100% funded by the federal government (making less than 1/2 of what an equivalent fed employee would make)

That plus the fed just printing money and increasing deficit by trillions a year

I think LDH took it over starting this fiscal year (October 1, 2025).
