Question for those wiser than me. Who were the candidates when Dinardo was hired, Saban was hired, and Miles? Thanks

Before hiring Miles, Skip Bertman interviewed Bobby Petrino and tried to interview Jack Del Rio. Skip and co. did not like Petrino. Del Rio freaked out when he got to the restaurant to interview, sat in the parking lot on the phone with his agent, and never went inside.

I was too young to care much abouth the DiNardo and Saban searches, I remember Pat Sullivan was a candidate before DiNardo was hired. RC Slocum might have been a candidate for the Saban hire.

LSU wouldn’t pay Pat Sullivan’s buyout after he agreed to take the job so they went with Dinardo instead.

Then Dinardo and Vandy ended up in court over the buyout he had to pay them.

I remember reading here that Saban endorsed Nutt for the LSU job upon his departure but it's never been corroborated.

Glen Mason was more for the 1999 search. Along with Bob Pruitt at Marshall, Mark Richt FSU OC, Dennis Erickson at Oregon State.

Don’t remember Dinardo. But both Saban and Miles were unknowns that hire came from nowhere. Wasn’t much fanfare to either at the time.

I know Mark Emmert (LSU Chancellor at the time) really liked Saban and went to the BOS and suggested they pay him $1 million. Saban was the first college coach to be paid over a million.

No, but there were only a few big established names like Bowden and Spurrier making it at the time. LSU was the first random program to “pay up” for a hire and it took people by surprise.

That deal was done way before the BOS meeting. They sealed it up in Memphis at Jimmy Sextons house.

Spurrier was making 2 million per year after the 96 natty.

No, when he signed at LSU, there were three other coaches making at least a million a year. They were Bowden, Spurrier, and Fulmer. All of whom had won national titles in the five seasons prior to 2000.

In 79 it was Bobby Bowden,Lou Holtz.Bobby beat LSU that season and decided to stay.Lou said publicly why would he want to coach there when they are firing a guy that won as much as Cholly Mac,who was winning 7-8games a year. In 96-7 it was Steve Spurriur ,Sam Ratigliano,a pro coach, and Archer.Arnsparger recommended Archer and went to FLA. as AD and hired Spurrier.

LSU had planned to hire Pat Sullivan away from TCU but that fell through and they went with Gerry DiNardo.

And it was only $250,000. How times have changed.

I want to see some bumps from back then. When did the coaching changes board and TD start?
