If you wan to pay them $10million a year give them a 3 year contract and if they do well or win a NC at your school then you can always extend the contracts and pay them a lot.A 10 years contract is a retirement package. If you give them a long term contract then don't complain why he is playing golf. Imagine you are 60 and your company gives you a 10 year $100 mil contract, LOL.

Length and guarantees are emhow you entice a big fish. They aren't leaving for your project without something attractive. And eventually the big deal will show up if they're good

The team isn't offering up 10 year 10/mill per year contracts. HC demands the long term and high dollar contract with the buyout clause.

To keep competitors from raiding when a team has a good year.

Guaranteed money is a different kettle of fish.

Bc if you don't someone else will and schools don't want to miss out on a hire they want.

Short of all the major universities colluding to agree to not give out contracts beyond a certain length, which would be an antitrust violation if discovered, the coaches have all the chips

One of the reasons used to be for recruiting purposes. That's why you used to see extensions given when a coach's contract was about to be less than 4 years left on it. Not saying it was a primary factor, but it certainly was one. I don't think that should matter as much in the transfer portal era.

Because in adult world when that offer is made to an established HC the coach says, no thanks.

Orgeron's initial contract was very LSU friendly. The reason was because there was zero demand for O as a HC from any other major conference school. O had no negotiating leverage. A guy like Kelly, who was doing well at ND, had all of the negotiating leverage. That would be the same for a guy like Kiffin now. He isn't going to accept would be a total value $30M contract when he already has a 6 year contract that pays him $9M annually ($54M total value)

EDT:

Length of contract is just part of the discussion. Total value is the bigger part. That's generally where the discussion starts. The length and annual payment amount are the second discussions.

To make them rich when they’re inevitably fired.

Almost no coaches on this earth can survive here for 4 years these days.

It is all about market price. If other playoff caliber coaches are getting 10 years 10M+ contacts, you have to match the number or go over to have a chance to hire one of such coaches. The way to have a cheaper contract is to go after a G5 HC or a coordinator. Even if in that case, 3 year contact is too short for a HC.

BC a good established coach knows that fans want results immediately.

At least Kelly has an excuse to say "who turns down 10 million a year".

Woodward has no excuse for such a lazy hire just to make a big splash. I'm guessing he's out the door when a president is hired.

Coaches have the leverage now. If want to get them from another school, they want that protection. Longer contracts give them that. Especially if they are a head coach. They want somewhere between 7 and 10 years.

If going for an OC or DC, then a 5 year contract would be fine. They want to prove themselves and know if they do, that will get an extension.
